That sucks to lose a good airplane like that. Pilot tried to save it, hard decision.

Watched several F-4 Phantoms with landing gear malfunctions belly in. Scary, one at night trailed flaming fuel from the wing tanks. Catching the arresting gear while sliding seemed to be an iffy proposition.

During ejection, the pilot’s malfunctioning seat put him in hospital with a vertebral fracture.

It could have easily read: "During ejection, the pilot’s perfectly functioning seat put him in hospital with a vertebral fracture."

He stayed with the jet as long as possible, only ejecting as the stricken fighter tipped on its side, careening down the runway.

From the video link that TChad posted, the airplane was doing just fine, going perfectly straight down the centerline, until after the pilot decided to punch out. Only after he punched out did the aircraft begin to swerve.
