SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who was Singapore’s first Prime Minister when the country gained Independence in 1965, has died on Monday (Mar 23) at the age of 91.
"The Prime Minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore. Mr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital today at 3.18am. He was 91," said the PMO.
Arrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced later, it added.
Mr Lee, who was born in 1923, formed the People’s Action Party in 1954, then became Prime Minister in 1959. He led the nation through a merger with the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, as well as into Independence in 1965.
He leaves behind two sons – Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang – and a daughter, Lee Wei Ling.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew did a good job. A little heavy handed at times but look at the results. The little guy has benefited as much as the tycoon.
Lee Kuan Yew epitomizes the mix of traditional Chinese values and entrepreneurialism that made Singapore the dynamic fulcrum of south east Asia.

One of the best leaders during our lifetime. What he did in Singapore is amazing.
It is amazing for people who would like to live in a one-party state where the government tells them how to live their lives, how many children they should have, what they should eat, what their kids learn in school, where they should live (and what happens to their bodies after they die) and what they should be allowed to read in their newspapers.
Not quite the sort of state that freedom-loving individualists would normally appreciate.
Don’t get me wrong, I have a soft spot for Singapore but it is precisely the sort of state that most people who read FreeRepublic would loathe.
Singapore is a corporatist dream state, the kind of state the business and political elites that fund the Uniparties of the Western nations want.
At least Singapore is an honest and open one party state unlike this nation where the pretense of two parties are promoted by people and the media with a stake in spreading the myth.
Political dissenters have been marginalized, the government controls media and there are speech laws restricting what one can say about people based on their ethnicity.
In its early days Singapore swallowed the Planned Parenthood propaganda hook, line and sinker. All the economic growth fueled the need for a growing population and the government reversed course. It tried to promote marriage and family.
The island has gotten bigger since independence because the government has filled in water surrounding the island to create more land.
A prosperous place, a beautiful looking city, but.......
The basic rule in Singapore was that it was (and probably still is) unwise to try to oppose the ruling party. If you didn’t do that, you were left alone. I know people from that country and that’s what they’ve told me. I’ve also been there - and in my opinion the government distorts the statistics to make it look like there are far fewer Malays (i.e., Muslims) than there actually are. If they tried being a democracy they’d likely end up like Lebanon.
