Ben Carson, a retired surgeon popular with Tea Party conservatives, has formally created an exploratory committee to run for president, according to his campaign chief executive, Terry Giles, the Wall Street Journal reported.
With the exploratory committee, Carson can raise money that he can transfer to his campaign once it begins, the Journal said.
He has made a number of hires lately, including a national finance director and aides in several early voting states, Giles said, adding that the campaign would soon announce more "major players," who will join Carson's team, the newspaper said.
Carson, a former neurosurgeon at Maryland-based Johns Hopkins University, has no prior political experience. He is a conservative commentator and author of "One Nation," which topped the New York Times bestseller list in June.
In February, the 63-year-old Carson said he could form a committee to explore a bid for the nomination and make a formal announcement in May.

No thanks.
I really like him, but I just don’t think your first political position should be the most powerful man in the free world. Since he’s from Baltimore, he should probably run for that Senate seat that is now an open race.
Would much rather see him come out in full-throated support of Walker or Cruz. Would hate to see conservatives splinter our vote yet again to hand the RINO the nomination yet again - and Hillary the WH...
Why is it that the Republican Party is afflicted by dilettantes coming in every four years who only serve to help split the conservative vote?
His articulated position on gun control is a non-starter with me.
Dr. Carson is a great choice for a Republican secretary of HHS, but not President.
What is your number one objection to his candidacy?
Screwed up stance on 2a.
Wrong sympathies during the Trayvon affair.
He has since tried to "walk back" statements on both.
It's going to be a very long time before this country will be able to stomach another black president, thanks to the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
I like Carson and he’d be great for a cabinet position. Due to his early pro-gun control statements I don’t want to see him as President.
No thanks
Because conservatives never display unity or unselfishness. RINO candidates rarely split votes. Recall how Romney dropped out early to clear path for McCain in 2008.
