A North Carolina officer shot dead a 74-year-old man whose concerned family had called the police and asked to check on him.
Officer Josh Lefevers arrived at the home of James Allen just before midnight on Sunday morning and announced he was entering the residence when Allen approached him with a handgun and refused to put it down, police said.
Lefevers then shot and killed him.

You would be surprised...I work in a college city and we get a couple of calls a week from parents out of the area wanting us to check on their kids because they haven’t heard from them in a couple days...so we are put In bad situations...
Arm yourself and be prepared and defend yourself. After an incident, call the police ONLY after you have spoken with a lawyer.
Exactly how can a relative who does not own a home give permission for the police to enter into it? They can express concern, but concern does not confer ownership.
There is a difference between a homeowner with a gun awakened at midnight and an ‘intruder’.
I once got a called very late in the night from the Cobb County Police dispatcher. She told me the police were outside my home and were wanting to ask me if I’d seen a runaway teenage girl in the area. It was actually a very smart thing to do.
I wonder how anyone knows how the cop announced himself.
That is a fair question.
Here’s two more for your list:
Have you ever been a police officer? No, eh? Then shut up. You don’t know anything.
It’s us against them. If you’re not for us, you’re for them.
Well, yeah, except that the old man was not an intruder. He was in his own home, facing what he thought was an intruder.
So actually, you have identified the wrong person as the intruder.
I have mentioned this on other threads. If cops are going to barge into a home, especially at night, they should be required to have a marked patrol car out front with lights flashing and siren on. Give the homeowner some kind of heads up.
That's a very good point. If this sort of thing is allowed to stand, then there's nothing to stop me from calling the cops at 1 AM and saying "I think I saw blackdog just leave a bar. He looked really depressed. I'm afraid he'll hurt himself of someone else."
Then at 1:30 blackdog's door gets knocked in. Unpleasantries result.
Exactly. Cop should have backed out and tried another tack. Ego probably wouldn't let him.
Never was a shoot to wound unless you believe in Hollywood
I think I love you!!!!
No, really, you’ve inspired me to prepare better. Thank you
Family: “Could you check on our relative?”
Police: “He’s dead.”
Why did cop not back out of the house? Why did he did he feel need to advance?
The police have become very good ticket writers and very bad at most every thing else....why were they entering his house uninvited???
THE POLICE ARE EVIL! They are written about in Romans, New Testament. JESUS WARNED YOU!
They were just provoking you to take a pot shot at them.
You're almost dead. Can I take a Life Insurance policy out on you? I need money.

Apparently good enough that they could see guns being pointed at each other...
