A Southern California high school basketball coach has been suspended and faces accusations of mercilessly running up the score after his team won a game 161-2, one of the most lopsided scores in state history.
Arroyo Valley High girls' coach Michael Anderson was suspended for two games after the victory last week against Bloomington High.
Anderson said that he wasn't trying to run up the score or embarrass the opposition. His team had won four previous games by at least 70 points, and Bloomington had already lost a game by 91.

Only in the world of “Liberal” insanity. In the world of sanity, he would be given a raise.
Before the game starts you can see it’s not going to go well. Before the game is even scheduled you can see it’s not going to go well. So both coaches are at fault for not finding appropriate competition for their team. Once the game starts, it’s the 161 point coach who is the problem. How many minutes are in a girls high school game? A score like that has to mean he had a full court press on and the losing team never even successfully in-bounded the ball. 161 points is a frenzied scoring pace.
Nonsense
Sportsmanship is not a liberal value.
More than 1 score a minute
Because there is little attention paid to girls basketball at any level this stuff happens all the time. Often the coach is a female who is “proving” she is just a ruthless as she THINKS male coaches are. Just read the weekend Youth Sports round ups in your local rag and you’ll see what I mean. Scores like this are very very rare; but 65 to 12 is not very rare. It destroys the fun part of sports for some kids.
4x8 minute quarters, is forty points every 8 minutes, or 5 points per minute.
Yes, the coach who won” is a jerk. Once you see that you are killing them you ease up, put the benchwarmers in and try to be gracious, not rub their faces in it.
They had scored hundred and four points by halftime. I imagine the final score would have been higher if the first team played the second half as well. The second or third team should have played the whole game without the full court press. This coach is a classless jerk.
I don’t know. . In the 2nd half they only scored 20 some points. Sounds like lack of intensity. . .
Stop pressing, go to a zone defense, four passes before taking a shot. Pretty simple. This is kids’ basketball for crying out loud.
Unless there is a rule limiting the number of points in a victory, I don’t see how one can suspend the coach for winning by “too much”. Of course in this nonobjective age, where it is all about grievance and feelings being hurt, a capricious non-objective response is to be expected.
Of course if there were objective rules, then the grievance mob would have their power stripped; and their real power is the power to be arbitrary. “Sentence first... verdict afterwards!”
Agreed. These are kids, and while they should be encouraged to excel, excellence is not just a matter of scoring more points, but of winning with class and grace. If this had been a professional game, certainly you do what you get paid for and outscore the other team by as much as possible. I would like to think a kid's coach is paid at least as much to cultivate the character of his wards as he is to teach them mad basketball skillz.
This never would have happened in a boys game.
There would have been fights on the court at about the 30 point mark.
There are ways to be sportsmanlike. In our town the girls lacrosse team went a decade without a loss. They would go into what they called code blue when they were up by five goals. It meant that they HAD to pass the ball ten times before they could take a shot. It got to be tedious to watch, but the other teams did not get beat by 40 points.
There were a couple of teams that did not get the treatment because the opposing coach was a jerk. Those games got into the teens.
In basketball you can pass and make the kids take 3 point shots. But if they go in, what the hell are you going to do.
As a boys basketball coach, I’ve been on both sides of this situation...
Since I was beaten by 50 once, when my turn came against an inferior opponent I took the ENTIRE starting 5 out and sat them and let the other kids get a chance to play... I even put restrictions on THEM as to what they could do and not do on the court...
Remember, there is NO SHOT CLOCK... It’s up to the winning coach to decide to shoot or not...
This is why kids stop playing organized sports...
The article says that the score was 104-1 at halftime. The winning team played all reserves and did not press in the second half, but still outscored the losing team by 57-1. I suppose that the winning coach probably could have recognized that this was a blowout and made the halftime adjustments after the first quarter, but given the difference in the teams’ ability, eit still would have would have been a very gaudy score.
This is a high school game, so it is expected that competition will be pressed harder than with younger kids. The coach did put in reserves and stop full court pressure. It is reasonable to make adjustments like that, but it is wrong and insulting to ask your players in the game to give less than their best effort. The article does not say that there was any taunting or acts of disrespect by the winning team. Given the way the losing coached whined, I think any unsportsmanlike conduct would have been noted, had it taken place.
I think the real answer is that these to teams should not schedule each other in the future, as they are at levels that are too different for meaningful competition to take place. But unless there are facts that have not been presented in the article, count me among those who think it is ridiculous that the winning coach was suspended.
” Once you see that you are killing them you ease up, put the benchwarmers in and try to be gracious, not rub their faces in it.”
My guess is that the scrubs were in early and the opposing team was simply woeful. What’s your next suggestion - tie one hand behind the scrubs of the winning team’s back?
What should the coach have done? Put in third stringers and tell them to just pass the ball around and not take a shot?
The other team needs to learn defense.
