Liberals everywhere were outraged this week after Rush Limbaugh said a black man playing James Bond would be ridiculous. The comments were made on Tuesday in regard to leaked Sony emails that revealed that CEO Amy Paschal wanted the black actor Idris Elba to play James Bond. Rush, however, wasnt having any of it. James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was, the conservative radio show host said. But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. Thats not who James Bond is and I know its racist to probably point this out, he added. Liberals everywhere are outraged by these racist remarks, but what do you think about it? Sound off in the comments below!

Does it really matter who they decide to fill the roll of 007? Why not Whoopi Goldberg?
The James Bond franchise jumped the shark 20 years ago...
Maybe the villain could be a modern-day Napoleon. When he is defeated he could say, “Able was I ere I saw Elba.”
I knew something was off when I saw my first black Santa Claus.
Now Black Irish are not Negroes....
“And the next Shaft should be white.”
Why not. They made Sam Spade white.
Except in this case, the PC people are not the ones making a big deal about this. A Sony exec suggested Elba for the role, without saying anything about his race - just that he should be the next Bond. It was Rush who made this an issue, and Rush who brought race into the discussion.
They made a Kojak TV series a few years ago starring Ving Rhames as Kojak. It lasted 9 episodes when they pulled it. So bad blacks wouldn’t even watch it. With Hollyweird anything is possible.
‘A Sony exec suggested Elba for the role, without saying anything about his race’
And the exec certainly knew what color Elba was. Undoubtely he was shot down for utter stupity.
Shot down for utter stupidity? Doubtful. Elba has been discussed as a possible next Bond for years. Not because he’s black, but because his skills/style/etc as an actor would be a good fit for the role.
Sure, why not. Probably do it for less $ than George.
A slave by any other name is still a slave.
I suspect it is because he is Black.
I doubt he has any acting skills which are particularly suited to playing a Scottish spy.
I really don’t see a problem with a black man playing James Bond...of course, for authenticity’s sake, he’d have to do it in “whiteface”.
Excuse me but I think you should refer to your own tagline on this one!!!
‘Not because hes black, but because his skills/style/etc as an actor would be a good fit for the role’
No black actor is a good fit to play James Bond anymore than than a white actor is a good fit to play Mammie on GWTW, who was also a fictional character.
That movie was a comedic form of the book, “Black Like Me.” It was very pc and innacurate in its social commentary for the 80s. “Black Like Me” was set much earlier where there probably was more anti Negro discrimination.
By that time I decided I did not like the movie Then they inserted an army that look like they were robots from a sci-fi futuristic movie.
What on earth an embarrassment this movie was for Costner.
I think there’s a difference between Mammie and James Bond. Yes, they are both fictional characters, and yes, as written, Mammie is black and Bond white, but I think Mammie’s race is much more central to her character (and to the story) than is Bond’s, especially given how far the Bond franchise has strayed from the source material.
That said, I understand where you are coming from as well. Just have to agree to disagree, I suppose.
There is a conflict in how a conservative would look at this.
First, it is a commercial franchise story and the conservative sees this as property where the Owner gets to do with it what he will, stupid or not. Should they choose to follow a pandering whim, good luck and all that.
Secondly, we can look at the character as somewhat in the public domain. The possibility of casting a person of a different ethnic, racial, gender or style background offends our sensibilities as the character and stories are now part of our culture. Conservatives try to value what has been handed to us and protect it. Change being constant and necessary, the conservative sees the value of reform although he knows it should always be careful and considerate of empirical proofs of what works and preserves the inherited worth.
Rush is citing the second issue in his opinion, but he could be just as conservative backing the first.
