I too tried internet dating several years ago. I was very careful and very fortunate that I didn’t wind up with an axe murderer or something. There’s just no way to actually know until you meet them. After several disturbing dates and a stalker incident with one of them, I stopped. There’s an adage about finding love on the internet that I think is right on the money: “The odds are good but the goods are odd.”
