Separate And Unequal: Minnesota School District To Review All Suspensions Of ‘Black And Brown
Daily Caller ^ | 11/10/2014 | Derek Hunter

Minneapolis Public Schools are implementing a new policy aimed at eliminating the gap between the races when it comes to suspensions. Nothing will change for white students, they will still be suspended at the discretion of each school’s principal. But for minority students, specifically black, Hispanic and Native American students, the Minneapolis Schools Superintendent’s office will personally review each case.

...

The ethnic make-up of Minneapolis schools is majority minority. According to data for the 2014-2015 school year, 33.8 percent of students are white, while 37.2 percent are black, 19.3 percent are Hispanic, and 3.8 percent are Native American. Asians represent 6.8 percent of the student body but were not mentioned by Superintendent Johnson as being impacted by this new policy.

How this policy of different standards for students of different races squares with the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka remains to be seen, but court challenges are expected in the case.

Yes, it seems to me that this is prima facie racial discrimination.

Why doesn't the Minneapolis Schools Superintendent’s office personally review all cases--regardless of race?

Is this some sort of posturing?

Pretty sure most residences are houses and apartments, which don’t know anything. The residents? Well, some of them are o.k.!

What surprises me is why is this surprising? It’s just another blue city with a liberal majority in a red state. It is no different than Illinois.

My bet is a good portion of those 33% white kids attend private school.

What they need to do is track how black students are treated by black teachers, or how Hispanic students are treated by Hispanic teachers. Everyone's assuming the teachers and staff are all white and that therefore this is racism, but I can tell you that at my inner city school, we have 27 adults (teachers, security, and support) and only 6 of us are white. One is Asian, one is Armenian, 4 are black, and allllll the rest are Hispanic.

But as far as I can tell there are exactly ZERO studies about this that indicate the race of the teacher.

Every single white and Asian parent should pull their child out of that school district, and let the chips fall where they may. That is exactly what we did. When I learned (first hand) that the response to this type of misbehavior and thuggery was allowed because, “that is their culture”, we pulled our children out of the district. I am so grateful that we could do that.

Now the district whines because it is bleeding students, accusing local charter schools of “stealing” their students. *Pffft*

I have used the following poem (by Alice Walker) to teach a unit on The Harlem Renaissance and A Raisin in the Sun. I will ask students what they think of the speaker’s attitude toward her mother and then speculate about what the attitude of “her mama’s generation” might be toward today’s [Black] students. Occasionally, a light bulb will go off (but not enough by which the class might read the next poem):

Women

They were women then
My mama’s generation
Husky of voice—stout of
Step
With fists as well as
Hands
How they battered down
Doors
And ironed
Starched white
Shirts
How they led
Armies
Headragged generals
Across mined
Fields
Booby-trapped
Ditches
To discover books
Desks
A place for us
How they knew what
we
Must know
Without knowing a page
Of it
Themselves.

Why should they be expected to know about Lake Superior? It's too far away.

Jay Leno on one of his "Jaywalking" segments asked someone what the body of water a few blocks away was, and the man did not know it was the Pacific Ocean.

To your first question, it’s urban flight as it is in many metropolitan areas. Whites moved to the suburbs and ex-urbs. I’m one of them.

Thank Lutheran Social Services and other bleeding heart liberals for bringing in all the illegals and the United States’ largest Somali population. Hate to say it, but a lot of people of Scandinavian heritage are socialists at heart. That thinking from the home country has been passed down through generations.

Jobs, per se, are not the attraction. It’s the robust ‘white guilt’ imposed welfare system that brings them here. We workerbees in the suburbs and outstate Minnesota are charged by our lovely state to pay to for the leeches in the inner-city.

We pulled our son out of Minneapolis schools when he was in first grade, moved to a rural area and have never looked back.

He’s a senior now with excellent grades in a great school. I’ll never regret the move, though he complains there’s not much to do here. :)

They don't want to go there.

Something similar happened in the first High School I went to (east coast, ca 1970). Rather than be accused of racism, black students were given a pass as administrators and teachers looked the other way (only black teachers dared try to maintain discipline among the black students). When the black students ran wild because they could get away with virtually anything short of a capital crime, it wasn't long before the white students decided they "had equal rights, too!".

The result was years of mayhem in the halls, State Police patrolling the halls with K-9s on occasion, all but two entrances to a 1200 student school chained and locked shut, and bomb threats on a daily basis.

If the school district in Minnesota wants that sort of mayhem, they will have it, otherwise, they will emphasize that the rules are the rules--regardless of what color your hide is--and should be enforced with equal vigour for all.

Luckily, I was able to leave that wonderful educational environment and go to a private school. Not everyone has the option of getting out.

Yeah, right. More of them will be made an example of for trumped up offenses, and the entire discipline of the group will be lowered to excuse bad behavior by the favored-status persons, if my experience at work is any example.

Back before integration, Black school teachers/principles did not tolerate bad behavior among Black students. They were expected to do well, obey teachers and act responsible as a result many all black schools were top performing ones. Then came the liberal infection of public schools and all that changed for the worse.

My experience was much the same. After integration (just) we white kids were roundly excoriated by the white music teacher in the (formerly black) school for our rowdiness in line and in general.

The building was older, but spotless and impeccably maintained, the (original) students were still behaving as if they had been regimentally disciplined (something we learned, ourselves), and the emphasis was strongly on education as the key to achievement that would overcome any obstacles in life.

The teachers were excellent, the administration fair in its dealings with students, and the principal was a man we all respected.

By high school, all that had broken down. There are those who may consider the thought racist, but black students (at least in our area) were better off before integration without the meddling of liberals.

A generation was sidelined by ineffective discipline, despite the heroic efforts of teachers to maintain order and emphasize education.

I had graduated High School before those in a more northern state who clamored to order us to integrate would bus their own children across town.

My residence isn't fully aware of where it lives, either. I had to put a tag on it with the house number so it wouldn't forget.

They were expected to do well, obey teachers and act responsible as a result many all black schools were top performing ones. Then came the liberal infection of public schools and all that changed for the worse.

I remember from my childhood, the safe black neighborhoods in the cities, where there was a big church on every corner and people who dressed and behaved with dignity. Against a backdrop of discrimination, they as Christians were holding their heads up and teaching their children to be worthy of praise by the Lord. The bad black neighborhoods, like the bad white neighborhoods, had bars on the corners, gambling, and various forms of sex for sale.

In the good neighborhoods of all colors, adults were to be respected by children and almost any neighbor could correct a child or tell their parents about misbehavior, which the parents then corrected. And how!

Your mother is right; liberalism blames others, jumps to the immediate defense of wrongdoing, makes excuses and cries discrimination instead of seeking to prove oneself through good habits and responsible behavior. Liberals have replaced a Christian culture that worked its way towards a moral resolution, at last enacting civil rights laws to try to address the conflicts of people of two different cultural backgrounds. But it was always the truly Christian people, black and white, who agreed in principle and worked first for Abolition and later for Civil Rights.

Liberals, on the other hand, want to force outcomes while removing or even outlawing truth, personal responsibility and the spiritual gifts of grace, mercy, forgiveness and love found in Christian culture. It's not working.
