It’s not just the United States Senate that switched political parties on Election Day.
Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon and conservative phenomenon who rocketed to fame when he challenged Barack Obama at a prayer breakfast last year, also officially changed his political affiliation, moving from independent to Republican.
The step is another indication Carson may run for president in 2016.
Carson, whose career was spent as a doctor at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Maryland, filed the paperwork in his new home county of Palm Beach, Florida, a traditional Democratic Party stronghold.
“It’s truly a pragmatic move because I have to run in one party or another. If you run as an independent, you only risk splitting the electorate,” Carson told the Washington Times just after making the change. “I clearly would not be welcome in the Democratic Party, and so that only leaves one party.
“Fortunately, the fit is pretty good,” he added. “I believe in reasonable sized government. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe in individual freedom. And I believe in creating an environment to let free markets grow our economy. And all of that is very consistent with being a Republican.”
Carson told the paper he actually grew up a Democrat, but then changed his party affiliation to Republican in the 1980s after hearing Ronald Reagan.
“Like most Democrats who were black I was told most Republicans were evil, racist people. But then I started listening to Ronald Reagan and I thought, ‘God, it just makes so much sense. Let me investigate this,’” said Carson.
He switched to being an independent about 15 to 20 years ago after getting a “sour taste” watching Republicans who had their own personal foibles impeach President Clinton over an extramarital affair. “I just saw so much hypocrisy in both parties,” he

WRONG! The impeachment was due to the fact that Clinton LIED UNDER OATH - something you or I would be charged with perjury for. There's a BIG difference. Had Clinton simply not lied to save his a$$, impeachment wouldn't have been on the table. As much as I like Dr. Carson, I won't be supporting his candidacy.

I agree. The sad experience of Herman Cain taught me that we need somebody who has been thoroughly vetted and battle tested.
Scott Walker certainly seems to fit that bill.
.......rather than write up a piece I will just totally agree with what you say! The only thing I would add is Carson needs to go to the top of Mt McKinley with Palin ALONE so she can have his un-divided attention and therefore be able to educate him on how virulent the attacks on him, and his family, will become!
Then, he should come back to DC and chat with Clarence Thomas for a while.
To be certain though, if he becomes the nominee I will vote for him.
On the “vetting” spectrum, and compared to Palin and Thomas, Dr. Carson is about 10%.
His belief that the fundamental rights of people vary depending on whether they live in the city or the country is the one that bothers me. There's something off about the man.
Governors tend to make good Presidents. I am very partial to them.
He ight have won Maryland governor if he was on the ballot this week. But he didn’t run. Maybe he can run for Senate in 2016.
He can’t be a serious Presidential candidate with no political resume’. The only reason he’d have to run is to split the conservative vote and help Jeb Bush.
Which is why I want somebody who has been through the meat grinder before, whose family is familiar with the dirty tricks that Dems pull, and prepared to deal with it all.
I have very deep respect and regard for Dr. Carson and he is a very welcome addition to the Republican Party, where his voice should be heard and used to represent the party at every opportunity. But his qualifications for office would recommend him for Surgeon General, Secretary of HHS, head of a commission to untangle, dismantle, and replace Obama’s health care debacle. Not the presidency, or at least not until he has some real political scars and the thick hide necessary to be an effective president.
I believe Dr. Carson lives in Maryland, a solid blue liberal state, thought to be off limits to Republicans...until last Tuesday night.
Suggest he prove himself on state level first before running for POTUS.

As long as he knows that the GOPe Ruling class hated Reagan, and has done everything they can to purge Reaganism out of the party.
He'd make a fine VP.
Why?
While Dr. Carson has some very good talking points he is not by any means that conservative. He would be better off as a cabinet official...or maybe a run for the House or Senate....or Governor!!!
Dr. Carson needs to fully understand that the impeachment of Clinton was about suborning perjury to protect his butt. Disgusting as Clinton's behavior was, it was the cover-up which triggered impeachment.
He could tell all of America's children that voting democrat makes you stupid.
