The Democratic candidate in the race against Sen. Pat Roberts in Kansas ended his campaign Wednesday, leaving an independent candidate and a Libertarian candidate to face off against the three-term Republican incumbent.

Chad Taylor, a district attorney, informed the Kansas Secretary of State Wednesday that he is withdrawing from the race. Originally, his statement said "suspended," but the word was lined through and replaced with a handwritten "terminated."

Taylor issued a separate statement saying he made the decision after consulting with his staff, supporters and Democratic Party leaders. He did not give a reason.

Possible dirty trick: Early speculation is that polls indicated that a third party candidate named Orman had no chance in a three way race, but could beat Roberts in a head's up race. Thus, the Rat may have pulled out in order to possibly cut the GOP number in the senate.

The Dems probably told him to bow out so they can put a stealth candidate in at the last moment. Yup, I smell a rat.

Shouldn't the Republicans be doing the same?

There is no stealth candidate for them to put in. It's pretty simple. Roberts is polling less than 40% in a three man race. Taylor supporters are not going to go to the Republican, they'll go to Orman. I'm not saying that Roberts is toast, but this isn't going to help him at all.

And BTW the same thing just happened in the Alaska governor’s race. The Democrat dropped out and threw his support to the Independent.

Is it impossible for the Dems to put another candidate in his place in Kansas?

“Bingo. And once elected will suddenly discover his Democrat roots...”

From the article: “Orman, the co-founder of a business capital and management services firm, ran for Roberts’ seat in 2007 as a Democrat but dropped out early in 2008. He said he grew unhappy with both parties.”

According to the article: “On Wednesday, Orman received the endorsement of Traditional Republicans for Common Sense, a group of former moderate GOP state legislators unhappy with the party’s conservative leanings.”

So this poses a real challenge to the ‘principled conservatives’ like those who post against the GOPe, what’s more important, principles or removing Harry Reid.

They do. They also employ any means to make sure the demos win.

According to this morning's broadcast of Morning Joe Claire McCaskill, with Harry Reid's blessing, pressured the low polling Dem to drop out, knowing the Independent will always vote with the Dems.

I doubt that it's impossible, but I don't think they want to. Word around town is that the Democrats pressured Taylor to drop. Orman is better funded and already has upwards of 30% of the vote in some polls. Expectation is that Democrats will migrate to him, that Roberts will lose a two man race where he might have won a three man race, and Orman will caucus with the Democrats.
