The Department of Health declared a Chikungunya virus epidemic in Puerto Rico since it is a new virus in the island, the population does not have the antibodies to fight it, and cases are concentrated in the same zone.
As of June 25, 206 cases were reported in the island.
It was [also] reported that 89% of cases in Puerto Rico were registered in the Metropolitan Area: San Juan, Carolina, and Bayamón.
So reported Health Secretary Ana Rius this morning, explaining at the same time that, through Administrative Order 324 that declares the epidemic, all health plans must cover testing for Chikungunya. Patients [enrolled in the island's] Healthcare Reform [plan] are also covered for the test.
Health plans and Healthcare Reform will cover administering the test, while the Department of Health's laboratories in San Juan will process the test samples.
The symptoms of the Chikungunya virus are similar to those of dengue, the difference being the severe pain in the joints: hands and feet.
No deaths due to the Chikungunya virus have been reported in the island at this time. In other Caribbean islands, the incidence of mortality is less than 1%, the Health Secretary reported.
Oh damn, now we know what Obama’s number one task will be, getting Puerto Rican children shipped to the U. S. in a manner where it can’t refuse them.
Puerto Rico ping
As if we didn’t have enough problems with dengue.
And the hits just keep on coming:
Disease.
Are you kidding? They are already a commonwealth. Obama hopes this will push them to become our 58th state.
CHIKV is transmitted similarly to dengue fever and causes an illness with an acute febrile phase lasting two to five days, followed by a longer period of joint pains in the extremities; this pain may persist for years in some cases.[2][3]
The best means of prevention is overall mosquito control and in addition, the avoidance of bites by any infected mosquitoes.[4] There is no specific treatment but medications can be used to reduce symptoms.[4] Rest and fluids may also be useful.[5]
THURSDAY, July 17, 2014 (HealthDay News) — The first case of locally acquired chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, has been reported in the United States, federal health officials said Thursday.

I’m going to Florida this weekend, and there are cases reported there too!
Chikungunya virus is an alphavirus with a positive sense single-stranded RNA genome of approximately 11.6kb. It is a member of the Semliki Forest Virus complex and is closely related to Ross River Virus, O’nyong’nyong virus and Semliki Forest Virus.[25] In the United States it is classified as a Category C priority pathogen[26] and work requires Biosafety Level III precautions.[27]
Human epithelial, endothelial, primary fibroblasts and monocyte-derived macrophages are permissive for chikungunya virus in vitro and viral replication is highly cytopathic but susceptible to type I and II interferon.[28] In vivo, chikungunya virus appears to replicate in fibroblasts, skeletal muscle progenitor cells and myofibers.[19][29][30]

Puerto Rican children are U.S. citizens.
Puerto Ricans are Americans, and lots of mainland Americans go there for vacation - beautiful beaches, great food and great dancing! They made a major mistake when they elected a “community organizer” (a leftwing unionista) as governor a few years ago, since they had been doing well under a GOP governor for several years but got swept into the Obamamania leftist lunacy.
That said, this fever is not going to be stopped. A couple of cases have already turned up in Florida, although I believe they cases occurred among people who had traveled to Africa or were from Africa.
We’d have less to worry about if the liberal loonies hadn’t stopped the use of DDT, which is the most effective anti-mosquito treatment, for so many years that they’re breeding like mad out there (probably both mosquitos and liberals...except liberals prefer not to breed).
I live in Florida, and we spend a fortune for our “mosquito control district,” but it’s worth every dime if it keeps away malaria, various other maladies and now this horrible new one. Like it or not, it’s heading our way.
You folks make a valid point, although I hadn’t intended to infer otherwise about citizenship. Let me respond this way.
I agree with your take, but I would like you to think of it this way. Sure Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, U. S. Territory. Does that stop Obama from facilitating literally thousands of unattached children being shipped up to the lower 48 to be a burden on the mainland anyway?
He could round up 5 to 10,000 from California and ship them back to South Carolina, if he wanted. Would it reduce the negative impact on South Carolina if they were citizens?
Think of 5,000 inner city youth moved back to a neighborhood near you? Think they couldn’t find some kids in Puerto Rico like that?
Isn't that what the Dalai Lama said to Bill Murray in Caddyshack?
