A 2003 Supercharged Benz could probably have been sold in 2008, and a used Civic purchased, with money left over.

A Supercharged Benz is expensive to maintain, and not nearly as reliable as a Honda Civic.

Plus, it drinks fuel.

Because you can cash out what you have tied up in it and deal with your current situation. I had to do this once when laid off while in college (newly married, working full time and paying my own way).

Sold two nicer cars, got one beater, preemptively got out of our apartment lease, downsized my whole world and sent out 100+ pre-internet resumes with the proceeds.

After 15 weeks, I was back in the work force. I didn't qualify for unemployment since I was continuing school and not making myself available 24/7.
