By a mixture of ideology and fiscal and social policies, the family has been systematically fractured and destroyed in England, at least in the lowest part of the society that, unfortunately, needs family solidarity the most.
Certainly the notions of dependence and independence have changed. I remember a population that was terrified of falling into dependence on the state, because such dependence, apart from being unpleasant in itself, signified personal failure and humiliation. But there has been an astonishing gestalt switch in my lifetime. Independence has now come to mean independence of the people to whom one is related and dependence on the state...by which they meant independent of the fathers of their children...The state would provide. In the new dispensation the state, as well as television, is father to the child.
When I started out as a doctor in the mid-1970s, those who received state benefits would say, I receive my check on Friday. Now people who receive such benefits say, I get paid on Friday. [T]o say that they get paid on Friday is to imply that they are receiving money in return for something.
[A]bout the intellectual and moral corruption wrought by the state in recent years[t]he governments of Britain, of both political parties, managed to lessen the official rate of unemployment by the simple expedient of shifting people from the ranks of the unemployed to the ranks of the sick. [B]y 2006a year of economic boom, rememberthe British welfare state had achieved the remarkable feat of producing more invalids than the First World War. This feat, then, could have been achieved only by the willing corruption of the unemployed themselves[a]nd the government was only too happy, for propaganda purposes, to connive at such large-scale fraud.
[W]e [have] destroyed all economic incentive for [unemployed people] to work.

The Right better get it straight that we MUST DRASTICALLY CUT big, unconstitutional government, our enemy within. Otherwise, America will follow the same "Road to Serfdom" that England has followed.
There are WAY too few on the Right to articulate this. We are in the middle of a PERFECT CASE IN POINT. The Right should be HOLDING THE LEFTIES FEET TO THE FIRE regarding our paltry economic condition. We should have such a withering offensive that all the Obamocrats can do is hide in their symbolic caves.
Obama’s best defense is apparently a good offense. Notice how “No Drama Obama” never really defends himself. He just looks for weaknesses in the opposition and works to put them on the defensive. Seems to work.
Had to image with these stats. Why aren’t these stats blazoned across the sky for all to see?

Excellent article; thanks for posting. To save Western civilization we must break the back of socialism; nothing short of this will do.
And to sustain our move upward to freedom, we also need a spiritual reawakening of hearts turned again toward the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ.
Technology is eliminating one job after another. Won't be long before nobody has a job.
What do you think that will result in--free enterprise?
BTW, you can sign up to get these Imprimis articles every month for free. They are adaptations from insightful and thoughtful guest speakers at Hillsdale, a Christian college that refuses federal funding (something states should seriously consider doing).
The Lear Jet Leftists expect to form the core of the global Green Inner Party. They will continue to enjoy the finest foods and most advanced gadgets the world has to offer — while deciding your fate for you.
If you work very hard and show them your unwavering loyalty, you might be permitted to join the global Green Outer Party. You would then be allowed occasional servings of meat - and air conditioning on a rationed basis.
The rest of us will eat insects and swelter for the good of the planet.
There are too many on the Right and even here in FR that don't understand the wealth creating power of the free market economy. Yet capitalism and the free market are essential elements of a free society and a free society is the healthiest, happiest society on earth. That's why historically, people have risked their lives and lost their lives to have a taste of the freedom we too often take for granted.
That's a point I had not seen before.
He starts out nailing the problem pretty well, but then segways off into "technology" as though innovation and technology are somehow tied to our loss of freedom?
No technology is not the enemy of freedom and wealth, it is the creator of wealth and an expanding economy.
There is only one source of our loss of freedom: big federal government.
This is just one of the many articles dealing with economics, the Constitution and other topics which are important to us as individuals.

My post was to "Age of reason" that stated;
Technology is eliminating one job after another. Won't be long before nobody has a job.
What do you think that will result in--free enterprise?
I think there's some truth in his post.
The song touches on this aspect of what is called "progress".
We are becoming slaves to both big government bureaucrats as well as, our technology.
"You can keep all your SMART MODERN WRITERS"
Technology provides an extraordinary amount of "time saving" solutions but it also eliminates the value that is added from those with experience.
Our culture has been discounting "experience" and seeks answers from "Google". If your are over 45 and offer an answer to a 24 year old, they will go to Google before they recognized your knowledge.
It gets worse, they don't want your knowledge, even if it is correct. They think you "don't understand" because you didn't "come of age" with this technology as part of your being.
So, I think it's a combination of the "Welfare State" and the reliance on technology that is destroying the cumulative knowledge of hundreds of years of experience.
