FEDEWA: American schools are failing!
WashingtonTimes.com ^ | June 1, 2014 | Lawrence J. Fedewa

According to the latest international rating of education in 65 countries, American public schools are in a free fall. The overall rank of the U.S. is 29th in the world — behind the Slovak Republic, Russia, and Vietnam. Asia dominates the top 10. Shanghai, China, is the international leader, followed by Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, South Korea and Macao. Including Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, four of the top six are Chinese.

These are some of the results of the educational research division of the Organization of European Cooperation and Development (OECD) called the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which issues its report every three years. The test population is 15-year-old students who are tested on their critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities in mathematics, science and reading. The OECD has found that student achievement is the best indicator of a nation’s future economic health. By that measure, the United States is on a downward economic trend in the near future. Looking at the American economy of the past few years, some observers believe that this trend is already in evidence.

Another measure of educational success is the dropout rate for high schools. According to the Center for Educational Statistics (U.S. Department of Education), 1.2 million students drop out of high school every year. That is an average of 7,000 students every day, 25 percent of the entire population. Most of these students were in the PISA test range since most states’ truancy laws apply only until the age of 16. They surely did not help the U.S. averages.

If you removed the test scores of black and hispanic “students” then American schools would be in the top ten.

And if you removed blacks and Hispanics from crime stats, America would be a very safe country.

American schools began their downward spiral with the advent of the US Department of Education. The record is clear.

I cringe when I see young adults write in block letters while holding a pen like a monkey holds a banana. They can’t read cursive never mind write it. When I was in Grammar school we had a penmanship lesson at least once a week for only an hour but in that short amount of time everyone learned the basics of writing and improved over the school year. Now that hour of time is used to indoctrinate them into being good little Naz Democrats. We really are in deep DOO DOO.

Of course, if you accept the lie that their goal is actual education, then you could say they’re failing.

But, really, American public schools are NOT failing.

They are achieving their true intended goal.

And, we need to stop arguing with liberals on the surface, feel good, good intention “goals” that they profess,

and start accusing them using historical outcomes, of intended to achieve just those “failed” outcomes.

Your post reminds me of the South Park episode where the kids begin 4th grade. Cartman, upon seeing the alphabet in cursive writing, asks “What are those strange symbols?”

Degrees in Education and Journalism are among the most useless considering the absolute failure of their graduates.

every time the fed launches a new program it gets worse

The answer would be to go back to neighborhood schools and hold their communities accountable. When a neighborhood school is closed, it closes the auditorium for meetings, the playground, the place where parents got to know each other. It was a place parents could get to in a few minutes if their children misbehaved. In many cases, that school was the community. Student shows, sports teams, science fairs, end-of-year play days gave the community focus and pride.

Beautiful old schools with large rooms, good size playgrounds and lawns, large windows and better ventilation have been torn down and replaced with new prison-like schools.

The sad irony is the education gods don't have a clue....unless this is intentional. A lot of those closed schools did a real good job, in that they uplifted many students above the educational and income levels of their parents.

If you break out the results by racial and ethnic groups (a fairer comparison) the United States does quite well: White students in the US do well compared to students in White countries (or White students in other countries, as there are few entirely White countries left); Asian students in the US do well compared to students in Asian countries; Mexican students in the US do well compared to Mexicans at home; African Americans in the US do well compared to Africans in Africa.

What we have is more of a diversity problem than an education problem.

Our government single-payer schools function because several million teachers and school functionaries agree to go to work every day to support a system that is literally destroying our nation and the future of the children who are under police threat to attend.

Harsh? I don't think so. Abortion clinics operate the same way. They remain open because willing workers agree to evil.

One more thing:

No government school is religiously neutral ( not even math). Such a state of religious, cultural, and political neutrality can not exist in the mind of any sentient being. Children in our nation's godless single-payer schools **will** learn to think and reason godlessly. They must just to cooperate in the godless classroom, work with the godless texts, and do the godless homework.

Children also risk learning to be comfortable with socialism. Gee! If the voting mob can give them tuition-free schooling, why not use that power to get **lots** of free stuff.

THIS is what teachers agree to support every time they open a classroom door.

re: being told by the principal to pass a student who should've failed

I have nothing but contempt for teachers who didn't refuse. Teachers are supposed to be professionals. Sometimes that means putting the job on the line.

How'd I get around it? Arranging free tutoring during or after the school day for a failing student. If they showed up, I'm good enough at teaching math so they'd pass. If they didn't it, covered my *ss.

I’ve been reading up on our Founding Fathers and when you see what they were reading as “kids” ... the intellectual books, the way they wrote .... unbelievable. No wonder they were the “giants” that they were back then. Just a “wild”, off the cuff statement ..... I suspect many folks in this country don’t have the reading skills/comprehension to read/understand the Bible, even a version that is not King James.

I didn’t need to see this article to tell me that our schools are failing. Time for a major overhaul.

The “teachers” are no more than a “brainwashed” product of the colleges and liberal professors. We need to start there first.

The public schools are the greatest achievement of American Socialism; it is successful beyond the dreams of its founders.

The first place to start is to rescue the children from this godless and evil system of single-payer Marxofascist indoctrination.

There are whole counties and even entire states where, if parents simply removed their children, the entire EVIL single-payer system of godless and Marxist indoctrination would immediately collapse.

I had an interesting conversation with one of my neighbors who is a gym teacher for the district. She also is a personal trainer on the side. Home schooling parents hire her for their children. She said the home schooled kids are very well educated and worldly, meaning that they know what is going on in the world as far as currents events are concerned. She said that they are different from her public school students.

It’s time to eliminate the Dept. of Education entirely, no more federal mandates, and let local communities develop their own curriculum and methods.

If we went back to the curriculum of the 1950’s, we’d be right back up there near the top of the list.

Someone once posted an article which delved deeper into America’s PISA data. Long story short, except for one racial subgroup, America’s PISA scores are near the top internationally. It is one racial subgroup who’s PISA scores are going from bad to worse, and dragging down the country’s average.
