Because self sufficiency was abandoned after Reagan. Since then we’ve had all these smart transnational types. Globalists belief in interdependence and harmony. Massive bureaucratic oppression too, but that’s another story.
This is positive in two ways.
1) The most modest of sanctions are hurting the Russian economy, especially the pullout of investment.
2) Long term, we now know we are dealing with ColdWar Russia again, so this silly reliance on them for anything will be done away with.
