WASHINGTON Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said the future of the Republican Party depends on what the Republicans do to expand its appeal among Hispanic voters and show them that the GOP is not just the party of deportation.
Ive been saying over and over that the Republican Party cannot win until its more diverse, until it looks like the rest of America, he said.
During a Tuesday symposium hosted by the Media Research Center (MRC) and the American Principles Project (APP), the Kentucky Republican and potential 2016 presidential candidate said that if the GOP wants to appeal to minority groups it has to show up and say something.
Paul said Republicans should work to get the the door ajar for minority groups.
I think that whats happened is that theres not the perception of empathy coming from the Republican Party, that we care where they are coming from and that we care what their problems are. Until we get to that point, theyre not going to listen to any of the next message, he said.
Paul highlighted Mitt Romneys poor showing among Hispanics in the 2012 presidential election as a reason for winning their support.
Theres enormous upside potential. We could probably double our vote, but weve got to get the door ajar.
While Paul opposed the comprehensive immigration reform package in the Senate last year, he has indicated his support for other approaches to reform.
He said one way to appeal to Latino voters is by ensuring that Mrs. Garcias nephew is not going to be sent home to Mexico because everybody, even those who are here legally, know somebody who is here who doesnt have the proper visa.
The other thing to acknowledge is, its not always the individuals fault, he said, referring to those who are undocumented. Sometimes its a child who has no control over this. But sometimes its also someone who came here and tried to use our system.
We as conservatives talk a lot about big government and how [it] never seems to work. Were always talking about Obamacare now, how big government is a disaster . Well, guess what? Big government is not very good with the visa system, either. Part of the problem is not the fault of those who are coming to this country and try to use it, part of the problem is big government, he added.
In contrast to the strategy laid out by some conservatives who argue that the GOP should move beyond immigration and focus on issues where Latinos and conservatives share common ground like abortion and marriage, Paul called for a change in tone when talking about illegal-immigration reform.
The bottom line is that the Hispanic community is not going to hear us until we get beyond that issue. Theyre not going to care whether we go to the same church or have the same values or believe in the same kind of future of the country until we get beyond that. So showing up helps. But youve got to show up and youve got to say something and it has to be different than what weve been saying, he said.
Paul said he opposed the immigration bill because it still did not allow for those on work visas to switch jobs. He gave an example of an immigrant who came to the United States on a legal work visa to pick crops for $9 per hour but every day on his way to work saw an ad for a construction job that offered better pay.
You become an illegal alien by taking a better paying job, Paul said. That has to be addressed. If you dont address that, youll continue to have an illegal immigration problem.
Asked by MRC President Brent Bozell how many times he has appeared on Spanish-language media outlets, Paul said he has made about half a dozen such appearances since becoming a senator in 2011. He added that he hoped to do more and that other Republicans should do the same.
We need to do more of it. I need to brush up on my Spanish, Paul said. Even though I took Spanish in school, mines not good enough to do an entire interview in Spanish.
Pauls remarks were followed by a panel that focused on strategies and tactics for communicating the conservative message to U.S. Spanish-language news outlets.
MRC Latino Director Ken Oliver-Méndez presented some of the findings of the organizations first analysis of Spanish-language nightly news on Univision and Telemundo.
What we found is a pronounced leftward tilt in both networks reporting, particularly in coverage of U.S. domestic news, said Oliver-Méndez. As it stands now, Democratic, left-leaning sources consistently dominate the narrative in these networks coverage of domestic issues.
NO!
The door is WFO (wide open) for those who want to enter according to our laws, work to support themselves, and live according to American standards of civilized behavior.
Prove that the United States feral government can obey the law. Enforce current immigration law. Then we can talk about a new law.
Otherwise, it's pretty obvious that the plan is to pass a new law and selectively enforce it, omitting the parts once again that you don't like.
Whatever luster Paul might have had has worn down to nothing, he should ask Rubio.
Cruz 2016!
Rand Paul wont get past the desk of Tea Party backer Donald Trump who already appears to be behind Ted Cruz.
So one more candidate who does not believe in enforcing the laws they swore to uphold and people think Libertarians stand for something????
Turd didn’t fall too far from the bull.
Not that the paultards will abandon him.
FURP.
I don’t want Rand Paul representing me, just like I didn’t want Ron Paul representing me. I’m not about to advocate for abandoning Israel in that ocean of whackos and murderers - called Islamists and the Islamist regimes in the Middle East.
We can pander to African-Americans until there is nothing left to give away and they will not vote for Republicans until and unless it becomes culturally acceptable to do so. If Republicans ever want to gain the vote of African-Americans and Hispanics they have to divide the herd from the bell cows. That is they have to separate African Americans from their ministers who are in the bag for walking around money or who are simply communists like the Right Reverend Wright.
Community leaders in the barrio must be identified and co-opted. It is as simple and as base as that.
It is clear that the Democrats will control the new Hispanic television network and the Republican chances of breaking into the Hispanic vote will become nil. Our position on immigration will be used as a justification by the opinion makers to turn that vote against Republicans but it will not be the cause and it cannot be the cure.
This is just something the Political Class does not want to deal with.
They conveniently forget that we once granted a mass amnesty, this to political promises that it will ever happen again.
Now they come, not wanting to admit that they lied back then, that they deliberately did not enforce current law as written so that our chicken would be cheap. The Political Class allowed that mass immigration to happen and now we’ve an adult mass of people who were born here and have no legal status. Seems the immigrants came and reproduced. We schooled them and gave them health care with little contribution from them but then we’re nice people here in America.
But the Political Class wants us to la-di-da be nice guys and grant them all amnesty and things will be okay for another 25 years or so. And here we are, boobs all, that want the immigration laws straightened out before making new ones, we want the laws that exist, ENFORCED, we want to discuss this in a national dialogue.
And they call us nuts because we won’t be fooled twice.
well all we can do is refuse to support it until the whole can of worms is dealt with fairly and squarely.
MORE HONEST PHRASING:
GOP Must Get the Door Ajar for Minorities, Not be Party of Obeying and Enforcing the nation's laws"
This sounds like something Schmucky Schumer or Harry Reid would say, not one of our own.
Rand spouting more Dem talking points instead of engaging the undocument Democrats in the GOP. Maybe because he is one of them.
There’s “peasant law”, and there’s “Law for Our Betters”...
Rand Paul should join the party of STFU if he has nothing intelligent to say.
bye rand.

LOL!
It didn’t take long for this weasel to show his true colors.
