You still believe that myth do you. If you have read any of Mark Steyn’s stuff, you would know that we only pretend to be less Socialist than Canada and Western Europe. We actually out perform our Canadian and European friends in handing out the taxpayers money to the unproductive, and we do not even have a single payer health system. The truth is if you are a layabout, there is more dole money to be had in the good old USA. To pay for this, we also have the higher tax rates than the EU countries. You see the EU countries tax their productive people less than we do, but expect their 47% to have a little skin in the game, unlike us. Like Steyn points out, we just pretend to be this free market paradise, when the truth is that we tax more, and hand out more per capita than Sweden. This has been true with either Obama or Bush as President. As a people, we have a great ability for self delusion.

I’ve often thought the same thing - when it comes to social welfare policies, the US is actually more socialist than Canada. More agencies providing more programs. Also, Social Security is bigger (per capita, I mean) than Canada’s OAS and CPP, combined.
