Sr. Cristina Scuccia, stunned the judges on Italy’s “The Voice” this week. The Italian nun brought at least one of the judges to tears by her amazing performance.

Sister Scuccia’s performance this week already has over 3 million hits on YouTube. Catholic News Agency reported:

Sr. Cristina Scuccia is a 25 year old member of the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family who has appeared on “The Voice of Italy,” a reality show akin to “American Idol” or “Britain’s Got Talent.”

Sr. Cristina surprised the four judges on The Voice of Italy March 19 with both her talent and her habit.

The judges on the show begin with their backs turned to the performer, and turn around only if they like what they hear.

As the judges turned to face Sr. Cristina, their astonishment was visible at seeing a young nun singing Alicia Keys’ “No One.”

A native of Sicily, Sr. Cristina arrived at the show accompanied by four sisters from her community, as well as her parents.

The four judges of the popular TV program are the Italian singers Raffaella Carra, J-Ax, Noemi, and Piero Pelu.

After her performance, Carra asked Sr. Cristina if she is really a nun, and why she chose to compete on the show.

“Yes, I am truly, truly a sister,” she replied.

“I came here because I have a gift and I want to share that gift. I am here to evangelize.”

I watched it...good singer, but hardly worth the awe and wonder outside the fact she is a nun.

I hate—hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate that kind of music. The music itself, and the dance, body language, vocabulary, and world view that accompany it, are Satanic.

I am appalled to see a woman of God capering about in that fashion.

A nun is a member of a religious community of women, typically one living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Greek Orthodox nuns:

Buddhist nun (this one also sings)

I'm better at reading Italian than hearing the slangy vernacular spoken rapidly. But I did catch that the tattooed judge asked the sister if she sings in church and she said yes; also he asked if the Pope knew about her performing and she said she had talked to Pope Francis on the phone. Either Francis, or she herself, then said her singing is a form of evangelism. (It would be worth finding out whose opinion that was!)

Also, when they asked her to choose her mentor, she said she was choosing the tattooed guy because he was the one who turned around first.

I heard several references to "the devil", and could not catch it, but am guessing it is a pop-culture reference to the goth punk guy with the little goatee and earrings, and that they were teasing her that she should team up with "the devil." When she was deciding whom to choose, he kept beckoning and saying, "Hey, c'mon, c'mon!"

From the comments someone posted this:

“I’m Italian, so I try to tell what they say:

She sings, they all turn around and they are stupefied.
The blonde judge asks her: “are you a real nun?” Cristina says “yes, I am a very true nun”. Then: “What do you think the Pope will say about you being here?”, she answers: “I expect a phone call from him (sarcastically). I am here because I have a gift and I wanna give it to you all! The Pope invites us all to go out and spread God’s word, and I wanna do that through music”.

Maybe another way to look at this — could this be an effective outreach to non-Christians? The 4 (freakish looking) judges just about had tears in the eyes when they saw her. Could this be their wake-up call? Based on her comments I don’t think she was trying to bring attention to herself - her intent is to bring others to Christ & thus glorifying God. I’ve got no problem with that at all.

I see that post 11 has a close translation of the Pope Francis segment, and that person didn’t hear that she has yet talked to the Pope.

yeah, it sounds like (per #11) that she said sarcastically that she expects a call following the appearance. Her gift/singing is a very serious form of ministry.

My bucket list includes once, just once, being able to sing a song while carrying a tune. Next life, maybe?

OMG!!! The “visual” was WAY worse than I ever could have imagined! I was APPALLED, embarrassed, (and I’m not Catholic).

I had the image of Satan, from “The Passion of the Christ”, wandering around behind the other nuns as they cheered and the judges?, (they looked like a biker gang). As I watched this nun gyrate on stage, I “cringed” inside. My spirit wept.

(Her singing was at best, “average”).

How ANY Christian, let alone any Catholic, could possibly condone this performance would amaze me.

I don’t throw around the words “Satan” or “Evil” around lightly, but this was definitely “Satanic”.

I’ll end where I started, OMG!

“In 1727, 12 Ursulines from France landed in what is now New Orleans. (See also: History of the Ursulines in New Orleans.) They were known commonly in the colony as the Filles du’ Casket or “casket girls” because of the wooden cases which contained their possessions on the trip from Rouen to the colony in the New World....”
