The takeover of Crimea by Russia is nearly complete. All that remains is the final vote on March 16. There would not be a vote if the outcome was uncertain.

More of Putin’s benign (sarcasm) actions, as it’s seen by his cheerleaders, the Putinista pseudo conservatives.

“I feel sorry for those who will soon be living in a nation they do not feel part of. But there is little that can be done about it.”

Indeed. Soros nation here and abroad.

If you misunderstand the forum’s understanding of Putin as “calling him benign”, “cheerleading” and “putinista”, you’re missing out the big picture: Putin is playing the right cards, nobody else is, and that’s going to shape geopolitics, like it or not. Thinking “since he’s the bumbling bad guy, nothing he can do will be ever well done” will only deepen the situation.

He’s not benign. Ask the Russians if he is. Thanks for cluing me on the big picture. You can admire his clever and cunning abuse of power all you want. It’s still a free country and you can cheer for anyone you want.

Some of these Putinissta people could be more comfortable praising and justifying his attack on Ukraine at the NATION or the GUARDIAN.

The real question is if the minefields are to keep the Ukrainian army out or the citizens of the Crimea in. Remember that the Berlin Wall was not about keeping outsiders on the outside, but keeping good communists on the inside.

No, you seem to be misunderstanding. The KGB thug is dealing from the war criminal deck. He belongs in a cell in the Hague. Invading a neighbor with soldiers without insignia, naval blockading, minefields, etc. Those are all indictable war crimes.

What Putin is doing is just a replay of the old Russian assault your neighbor play book. A well worn path and nothing special. But feel free to continue cheerleading if you wish.

“Admiring” is also not quite the right word. “Cheering” is not, period. It’s more of a standoff situation. Blink and you lose. Well, not us; we can blink from time to time, but that’s not the point. The point is, right now, not understanding everyone in the conflict’s strengths and weaknesses is only a disadvantage. It would not be the best strategy to say “don’t look at him, he could entice you to evil”.

I don’t know if that’s possible, but the best course of action would require the maturity to be able to say “yes, he successfully does that and that and that” and not thinking the one who says so is either an idiot or a communist shill just for noticing. Specially because that phrase has to be followed with “Now, how do we stop him?”

Fine... they’re “the right evil cards” or whatever. The point is, they work. He’s playing to win. Now, who’s answering to his play with “let’s lock him in Hague?” Nobody? Here it is. He’s winning. That’s not cheerleading - that’s plain and simple kibitzing.

Oops, in my haste I posted a ring pic of Wladimir Klitschko instead of Vitali Klitschko. Both brothers were part of the Maidan protests but Vitali is the politician and the one pictured with Yulia. Both of them had great ring careers and it looks like Wladimir will continue his boxing title defense with a bout in April.

Yeah, and Hitler and Himmler effectively murdered people. Putin jails dissenters, shoots and kills journalists, imprisons people to prevent opposition. He’s invaded Georgia and now the Ukraine. And you write in your run on sentence: ‘the best course of action is “yes, he successfully does that and that and that” So what’s the point?

The point is, understand your enemy. It’s not merely a matter of labeling people as “near machines that spend the whole day planning evil”. That will not work.

If we had a real man in the white house then Putin wouldn't be as cocky.
