Johns Hopkins doctors remove baby's brain tumor that contained teeth

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital have removed a rare tumor that contained several fully grown teeth from a baby boy's brain.

The tumor was found in the then-4-month-old from West Virginia in 2012 after a pediatrician noticed that his head was unusually large for his age.

Doctors wrote about the findings in an article that appeared this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. The discovery could someday help researchers trying to cure diseases or grow new organs, medical experts said.

"It gives us more insight into the origins of the tumor," said Dr. Edward Ahn, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins who was the lead surgeon in the case.

Possibly this baby meant to have a twin sibling.

According to the article, the 4 month old had fully grown teeth in in a tumor that grew from the same type of cells that grow teeth...

With obamacare around there probably won’t be much R&D anymore.

Very interesting.

Embryonic stem cells as therapy have done the same thing.

Thank you HangnJudge.

No, folks these kind of tumors are not "twins".

They are weird tumors that come IIRC from stem cells, so they end up differentiating into teeth, hair, skin and all kinds of structures.

They've analyzed the teeth in many of these cases and they are very strange. Not normal teeth at all. Something "like" a molar, but not quite.

Exactly. That is why I hate when people who oppose embryonic stem cell research are dismissed as anti-science "religious nuts".

The problem is that embryonic stem cells can theoretically become ANYTHING. Teeth, skin, hair, malformed organs, etc.

That's why they are called "pluripotent".

Now I have no objection to using stem cells, once they've differentiated into what they will become. Like a kidney.

But it is sheer lunacy to even tamper with injecting embryonic stem cells anywhere in the body.

This case is a perfect example. It happens in nature with catastrophic results.

Imagine injecting some Parkinson's patient with a batch of cells that will become teeth in their brain.

Not good science at all.

Odontomas are well-known lesions. They can occur anywhere in the body. Some of them contain miniature, formed teeth. While some of them just contain random materials of tooth-like substances. I’ve actually heard of a compound odontoma that formed in a uterus!

They are doing what they are doing for the Common Detriment.

"Common Detriment." A term we should consider OPENLY discussing..and putting in the faces of the elitist pukes who would rob us all blind.

1. FInd a problem..

2. miss label it

3. go about using that boogieman to create havoc.

4. Promise to cure that havoc
