‘To Those Who Would Call Me a Thug or Worse …’

I show passion on the football field—but that’s only a small part of who I am. If you want to judge me, I can handle it.

What a night, and what a finish.

Near midnight I still had about 70 unread text messages from friends and family, most of which read, “Best interview ever!” Many of my Twitter mentions were less supportive. My body ached. I was thrilled and proud and upset, all at once.

Here’s what happened …

Lesson Learned, Richard

Don’t pick on the pretty blonde. At least not on live TV with 30+ million people watching.

Thanks for the backstory. As far as I’m concerned he did what was most important when it counted the most. The rest is baloney - at least to me.

That’s true with regard to culture. The NFL’s culture reflects the popular culture, or perhaps vice versa.

Every football player, and every athlete, wants to dominate. That’s the real motivation. I just long for some sportsmanship. People can still have their ‘blood up’ after a game and still act like sportsmen. Or at least, some can.

Agreed, I think this is being blown way out of proportion. Trash talking has been a part of football for decades now. Deon Sanders, Michael Irin both come to mind.

Also certain players like to create a “persona” for themselves which makes them stand out in a very crowded market among athletes. So Sherman is going the Clubber Lang route... who cares??/ Every professional team needs a “villain” and Sherman embraces the role. But off the field he is clearly a different individual and spends a great deal of his time working for charitable institutions.

Heck I’m not even a Seahag fan and I love the guy. Do I want my kid emulating him on the playing field/court. Heck no, but teaching my kid to be respectful of opponents is my job... not Richard Sherman’s

Like when they asked Walter Peyton why he does not celebrate a TD. He said something to the effect, I want to act like I have been there before and will be again.

I live in Memphis Tn, I’m sick of 45 years of Manning worship.

That explanation sounds like excuses and boastful to me. What is seriously lacking in this generation and the one following is modesty. They have absolutely none. They think it’s ok to act like an asshat as long as you can back it up. It’s what separates athletes like Peyton Manning from guys like Sherman. Professionalism. You get paid to be a professional, act like one.

Shall we talk about Denver’s Wes Welker taking out NE safety? Think Welker wasn’t trying to “take out” Aquib Talib Sunday? Of course he was.

Just like they’ll try that with Sherman in two weeks. However, Welker better bring help, Sherman is far too smart to get caught up like Talib.

I for one can’t wait for the game and I hope the ref’s let them play.

Since the game will be the “Pot Bowl” I’m wondering how many fans will be playing drinking/smoking games like take a shot or bong hit every time Manning says “Omaha” and who’ll be awake at half time to hear that pathetic act of Red Hot Chili Peppers/Bruno Mars? I for one am sick of the Superbowl’s half time shows of the past 5 years or so.

I’m astonished at how many conservatives are defending this behavior and saying “oh well, he was just fired up”. I’ve been watching this game all my life and I’ve never seen this in a post game interview. Never. Trash talk on the field and off the TV screen is one thing.

Maybe we are all making too big a deal of it but if folks are going to defend someone acting like a complete ahole, then others are going to defend decency and professionalism.

What’s with all this stuff about Sherman’s intelligence people keep talking about? Has someone seen his MENSA membership card or something?

He is also a cheater who left USC right before the shtf. USC got punished, Carroll did not.

Pete Carroll's an amateur.

He did it with one program. "Saint" Lou Holtz did it with five.

Mr. Sherman was being a real Richard in that interview, but Fox is just as culpable in this, if you ask me.

Football is, was and always will be a sport of high emotion. Sherman had just made a defensive play that was the deciding factor in who will be going to the Super Bowl. He makes that play, his team goes. He doesn’t make it, 90% chance Crabtree catches it, and the 49ers are going to the swamplands of New Jersey. Who wouldn’t be amped to the hilt after that play? For Fox to grab the guy at that time and ask a stupid question like “Walk me through the play” at that time gets what they deserve.

Sherman is an awesome intense player.
I hope Manning “tests” him, so Seattle will get a couple turnovers!
Freerepublic is full of kneejerk reactionarys.
I saw the interview live and the poor little flinching reporteret is the only
one I felt bad for. I hope her hearing was not damaged.

“To Those Who Would Call Me a Thug”

Maybe that is why I’ve heard the NFL referred to as the “National Felons League”.
