Colorado flood towns may come back less diverse
AP ^ | 9/24/2013 | HANNAH DREIER

Carmel Ross, 66, an artist and caretaker for the elderly, thought about the town's future amid the splintered trailers that now surround the mobile home she rents for $430 a month.

"Who rebuilds a trailer park?" she asked, laughing through tears. "Lyons is going to become a different story now. It's a loss of a way of life. The things could always be bought again, but there will no longer by any low-income housing in this town."

Former mayor Tim Combs said the new Lyons might look more like Aspen, a tony, celebrity refuge that began as a working class hamlet.

"It's going to upgrade the town. We're going to see nicer houses replace a house that wasn't so nice," he said. "Lyons is surrounded by protected open space, so there will be no place for the poor people to go...."

...Lyons residents were told at a town meeting Thursday that it might take officials six months to restore drinking water and working sewage...

...Residents of the even more remote community of Jamestown have been told it could be a year before they can return.

..."Nobody wants to see those McMansions built that people live in only three weeks of the year," he said. "But it's the way this country works — the poor people are always getting pushed out, with or without a flood."

Get Hispanic and go to California. Nobody owes you a $430 trailer to rent in Colorado.

Government interference with the free market.

This is by design, the Elites driving ordinary people away from the beautiful places, the middle class and poor can go live somewhere else, and drive back daily to clean the houses of the rich.

A natural disaster happens and all the media can do is make it a class envy story?

Two thoughts actually, first this area where these proposed McMansions will go could end up being a squatters paradise. Folks only staying in these fancy homes 3 weeks of the year could leave them open for easy pickings.

Second, isn’t Obama working to introduce Section 8 housing for this very reason ...a lack of diversity.

Lastly, I have acquaintances that actually don’t own a home of their own, but they do long-term (6 months or longer) pet sitting & house sitting all around the country!

Lyons is a special place. A lot of the people there are blue collar musicians. Rocky Grass is a very special family friendly festival. When we were there several years ago, my husband went tubing in the river and discovered that several hundred dollars had floated out of his wallet. All but $20 was recovered and returned to him by local teenagers. I call them blue collar because they work very hard for the little money they make and they do this because they love the music (largely blue grass and American old timey). They could have long ago become some sort of tourist trap being on the road from Denver to Estes but have not done so.

Yup! Sort of my first impression on reading this too.

A class envy story and a reason for a FEMA camp? Trailer Park owners are saying they won’t reopen, so people have no where to go and now can’t afford to stay.

I’ve been to some of these ‘starving artists’ type hamlets. They are quaint and I like them for the uniqueness of the art pieces. Now, it sounds like they are going to bring big name/ticket shops with imports from who knows where? Urbana comes to the foothills? I don’t know...something does get lost in the translation.

“Second, isn’t Obama working to introduce Section 8 housing for this very reason ...a lack of diversity.”

Obama seems to think “whiteness” will rub off on blacks if he makes every municipality house a certain quota of blacks (this is akin to the Quartering Act that fueled discontent leading up to the Revolution). If he can just get EVERY white person to contribute (instead of those unfortunate enough to be in the states/counties/municipalities with a large welfare herd), he thinks things will improve...

The WHOLE country needs to become LESS DIVERSE, and if you are un-productive, we will NOT help you by sharing our earnings.

Either get on your own feet, or if you're unable to work (LEGITIMATELY), get help from your family.

You act irresponsibly, you pay the price, NOT someone else. You get pregnant, YOU are responsible, the father is responsible for the child's expense and NOT others....and, we do not allow murder of the un-born to wipe out your irresponsiblty.

Deal with it....or leave.

Diverse?? Really?? That’s the story? Diversity is one of the left’s meaningless “worship words” with imaginary benefits.

Sure. The transformation was already underway and the trailer parks would have been eventually sold and redeveloped. Now that the trailer park has been destroyed, there is no economic sense in rebuilding it. It seems bad for the people who are now displaced, but what was their investment in it?

If there is a place you want to be long term, the best way to ensure it is to own the real estate (but even that is not a guarantee).

When they say diverse, that is a code word for poor.

This is a tourist and retirement destination which depends on low wages. You might say service jobs or hospitality industry jobs, or seasonal jobs.

Low wages and high real estate or high housing. So losing low rent housing like a trailer park is significant. Faced with the cost re-establishing the trailer park, the owner will probably sell to a developer.

As you probably know, the hospitality industry is a strong backer of immigration reform and greatly expanded guest worker programs.

Can you imagine a town complaining because it has fewer low income residents?

Blunt, but to the point.

For years now, those who can afford it have been establishing private neighborhoods, gated communities. They pay a premium to live in cleaner, safer, quieter surroundings. They live behind a wall and a gate - necessary due to the rotting of American society.

Can you blame them? Poverty is not the cause, of course. But it’s highly correlative. Those who suffer most are the good people who are poor and have no escape.

I commute 35 miles each way because my only escape was “further out”. (And even at that, there is one family that upsets the peace of the entire small community, one “spoonful of sewage”.)
