The nation is much closer to treating all people equally under the law than 100, or even 50, years ago, an NAACP official from Washington says.
Hilary O. Shelton, the Washington, D.C., bureau director of the venerable civil rights organization, told a group of supporters in Fayetteville on Saturday night that many people are watching North Carolina's fight for justice through the Moral Monday protests in Raleigh.
"I'm convinced that the rest of the country is convinced that if North Carolina can make it happen, we can make changes all over this country, and I dare say all over the world," Shelton said in an hourlong speech. "Things are getting good in America. But if we don't continue the fight, they will take it all back."
Shelton was the keynote speaker at the 25th annual Life Membership Banquet for the Fayetteville branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Shelton is also the NAACP's senior vice president for policy and advocacy.
The NAACP has helped organize the Moral Monday events to protest various laws that have been passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly this year, including a controversial voter identification law.
At the banquet, eight people were honored with plaques commemorating their lifetime memberships. They included Associate Justice Cheri Beasley of the N.C. Supreme Court. The group's mother of the year, Audrey B. Cammon, also was recognized during the banquet, which is part recruiting drive and part fundraiser.
The theme of this year's banquet was, "We shall not be moved: Holding onto past victories as the fight for equality and justice continues."
Shelton told the crowd of about 200 in the John D. Fuller Recreational Athletic Complex that throughout the nation's history, brave men and women have fought to having fair treatment for everyone.
But with North Carolina dialing back early voting opportunities and passing a voter ID law, Shelton said, it's clear that more men and women must continue the work.
"Believe it or not, even in our democracy there are those that would rather have people not vote so they can win elections than make sure our democracy is realized," Shelton said. "Jim Crow might be dead and buried, but James E. Crow, Esquire, is still alive and well - and perhaps more insidious than ever."
Uh, what are they talking about?
Massa is higher class, now.
“Uh, what are they talking about?”
Thanks for asking that because I was thinking the same thing........now I know it’s not me
Moral Monday. NAACP.
Down is totally up, and right is totally wrong.
Whatever it is it seems important to the NAACP.
Probably no one else gives a crap.
No, they aren’t. Even North Carolina folks could give a flip. Every meeting they have is to find another ounce of weed care of some money that should go to food. McCrory’s doing all he can by feeding them cookies.
They are talking about the ABSOLUTE HORROR of Voter I.D. Cards. Armegedeon on steroids plus a full bag o barbeque chips, I tell ya!!
-——Things are getting good in America. But if we don’t continue the fight, they will take it all back.”-——
Who are “they” and what are they taking back....
If the knucklehead is talking about voter rights.....how can a state invalidate federal constitutional amendments?
"Moral Mondays" are when a bunch of North Carolina leftists "occupy" the state legislature building at the beginning of the week and get themselves arrested. In essence, they're protesting the fact the the electorate in NC had the temerity to elect a bunch of Republicans.
Founded by Communists, the NAACP has been, is now and will always be a subversive outfit. And, by the way, leftist DemonRAT lawyer Fred Phelps of the Westboro bunch, has been honored by the NAACP.
I know whereof I speak. During a period of foolishness in the early 1960s, I was actually a card-carrying, dues-paying member of the NAACP during a period when I rebelled against my Conservative Christian upbringing. Although I regret every penny I gave to the NAACP, seeing this utterly evil, totally racist organization from the inside was a valuable and unforgettable lesson.
After witnessing the diabolical nature of the NAACP, my Christian Conservatism was renewed stronger than ever. I campaigned actively for Barry Goldwater in 1964 and was proud to cast my vote for him. And, similar to Ted Cruz, I gave what I could to North Carolina's Jesse Helms, a true American Patriot (RIP).
And is running the NAACP.
Many of us regret what we did in the 60s...it was in the air, and while all of us from the 1960s are Baby Boomers, the inspiration didn’t come from us but from our parents and grandparents, members of the “Greatest Generation.”
They never get the blame, but I can tell you that when I was growing up in New York and being dragged out by my friends to “Ban the Bomb” gatherings (virtually run by the CPUSA), the people in charge of getting teenagers out there were not only our parents’ ages but in some cases even older.
But many of us recovered in time...and some of us are now posting on FR!
No speeches denouncing the wave of black thugs on white violence.
If we can only rid ourselves of affirmative action, hiring quotas, college admission scaling, election gerrymandering, racial classification on census questionnaires, segregated contract bidding, and forced school integration, then we would be there already. Unfortunately, with equality under the law, there would be no need for the NAACP. So you can bet dollars to donuts that the NAACP will ensure that these race-based practices listed above will continue ad infinitum.
One of the problems with a title such as “Moral Monday” is that a lot of black civil rights leaders were, at times, immoral, especially concerning adultery and related sexual activities.
Those involved in such activities included Dr. King Jr., Rev. Ralph D Abernathy (though he later changed sides from the left to the right), Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr., and some others.
A bunch of the Mitchell family in Maryland went to jail for ripping off their organizations’ money and for criminal activities such as Food Stamp buying and selling (which is illegal).
Some of these leaders and/or their staff members were deeply involved in Communist Party USA and Soviet front affairs (esp. the World Peace Council). Over a period of time, this include Dr. King Jr., Abernathy, Jack O’Dell (King’s private secretary, CPUSA organizer for the South, US Peace Council and World Peace Council member/delegate, and involved in every major anti-Vietnam and anti-defense group in the country), Stoney Cooks, Carl Farris, Andrew Young (esp. re the PLO), Eleanor Norton Holmes, etc.
The use of the word “Moral” is suspect since the Left hated “The Moral Majority” but now they have a “Moral Monday”. It’s a lot like the “Million **** March” of Louis Farrakhan, the Million Moms Against Guns, the recent flop of the Million Muslim March, etc.
Titles are often used to disguise the real objectives of the organizers and participants, to raise money for their salaries, and for their egos.
In No. Carolina, it is to cover up the fact of voter fraud re registration. If you don’t have a govt-issued photo identity card, you can get one if you are a US citizen.
You can get rides to voting stations.
The rest is pure leftist bullshit. I walk around with two govt-issued ids (for work); a state Driver’s License, a state Disabled Persons card from DMV, I have my original Social Security card (carded on a piece of stone), precinct voter registration card, bills - phone, internet, water, gas, electricity, car tax payments, income tax payments, Social Security payment receipts, library card, bank credit cards and bank accounts/statements, etc.
You can’t live here without having some of them, and if you are very old, you can get them from your county/state without much of a hassle. You’re on their tax rolls, voting rolls, driver’s license lists, municipal utility bills, etc.
You are also in school records, church records, possibly on the census rolls (with street addresses going back decades), etc.
If you are a convict, an illegal, a transient, or college student, you may not be able to vote, legally, for well known reasons. But for the greater majority of people, esp. those born in local/state hospitals, there is an obtainable record (Obama being the present exception) of your birth and citizenship.
If anyone is immoral, it is those who pretend that today’s issues are not ones of obedience to the law, but of some other kind of fake voter intimidation and suppression.
North Carolina has finally begun to clean house and it takes place all during the week, not just on “Moral Monday”.
Maybe these phony “civil rights” leaders will be exposed as just that, phonies, so that the rest of the law abiding, hardworking citizens can get things moving in the right direction away from the leftist extortionists, ego-trippers, media pimps, and political hucksters.
My, My, that guy must get his suits from Omar the tentmaker.
...he still votes Democrat fifty times, every election."
