Anyone who spells it “fracking” is a journalist. It is fracing, which is short for fracturing. No one in the industry spells it that way.
You forget that in the entertainment world (specifically, in the long-running scifi series "Battlestar Galactica") the word "fracking" was used as a substitute for the obscenity which replaces the "ra" with the letter "u."
So by fracking up the word "fracing," opponents...or even well meaning journalists, can vent their fracked up ideas....
FUBAR are the journalists...
