Bill Would Let Michigan Install Red-Light Cameras
CBS 62 ^ | 5-24-2013

Michigan’s local governments would have the option to put cameras at intersections to spot drivers running red lights under proposed legislation in the state House.

A measure recently introduced by Republican Rep. Wayne Schmidt of Traverse City would give local communities the power to put cameras in place.

“This legislation will give more local control to our municipalities while offering a safer environment for the people who live in these communities,” he said in a statement.

The bill has gained the support of local law enforcement officials, who say the cameras will act as an extra deterrent to prevent drivers from committing traffic violations.

A friend of mine hasn't been in Chicago in years and got a ticket mailed to him. It wasn't his car that ran the light. He fought the ticket and won, but is still quite angry about it.

I have a real problem with the whole "guilty until proven innocent" mindset with these cameras. Cars don't run red lights. People do.

And then they can quietly reduce their yellow light time to manufacture some income for themselves as opposed to actually doing anything to improve public safety on the roads.

We’ve got some great reps in Michigan but we’ve still got some old guard RINOs.

I think of the RINOs as the enemy within. And when you think of the Democrats as the same thing, it gets clear real quick why we’re in such trouble in this nation.

Overall the GOP in Michigan is head and shoulders over the democrats but we still get some idiocy.

They put red light cameras in our city, promising not to shorten the yellow light time. Well, I don’t drive much, and probably hadn’t driven in a few months, but one morning I did follow my husband out to the mechanics to drop off one of our cars.

First thing I said to him after we had dropped off the car was...”They shortened the yellow lights.” He was doubtful. I guess it was noticeable to me because I hadn’t driven in a while, and it just felt wrong when I was going through an intersection, and the light turned red before it used to.

Sure enough 6 months later the company who installed the cameras admits they shortened the yellow light time, my instincts were right.

“The bill has gained the support of local law enforcement officials, who say the cameras.....”

will ensure a steady stream of money to fund their salaries, benefits and pensions.

OK, that second part was mine, but let’s be realistic.

FU, Rep. Wayne Schmidt, whoever the hell you are.

Red Light cameras are not about safety. They are about increasing revenue.
If you have these cameras installed time the length of the yellow lights. Later they will be shortened by a few seconds which results in more people going through red lights and getting tickets.

Here in Houston we forced the city to remove them. They’re nothing more than an automated ripoff tool.

Thank you. Isn’t it amazing what they find time to address while “Rome” (in effect) burns.

Aside from the problems caused by the cameras issuing tickets - even to motorists with no intention of running through red lights - how long do you think the cameras would last on the mean streets of Detroit?

I would have thought every state had them in place just for the added revenue the pols have to spend. I went and checked and this is what I found.

“Those camera stands will be gone in 60 seconds for scrap...”

Google “gatso.” These are the cameras in use in the UK. They are routinely “set alight” by means of a “petrol soaked tyre” being thrown around them. Ever try to extinguish a burning “tyre,” it’s damned near impossible. This action fries out the guts of the things!
