I created an account here just to wish you well and welcome home.

Not trying to be wise but I also wanted to correct a couple of names on the Kilo Kia’s. It is Ervin Emrick not Erwin.
And it should be Patrick Ryan Mc Clure not Robert Ruan.

I came across this quite by accident while doing some research and a chill went up my spine. Thank You, I have been trying to remember Lt. Chapmans name for years!!
I was in LCpl Michael Greens squad that day.

Thanks very much, Brother, and Welcome Home! I have made the corrections and expect to post this thread every year.

The only Kilo Marine I have had the good fortune of speaking to since returning from 'Nam is Lt. McIntosh, our Platoon Commander, whom I reached by telephone. If I recall correctly, I found him on the Together We Served web site.

I was medevacked out in late June due to a non-combat injury - when I returned I was assigned to Lima Company.

I hope that you will remain active on FR and invite you to visit the FR Canteen, which posts nightly at about 9:00, 8:00 on Saturday and Sunday evening.

Conor my name is johnny moss i was in the ambush may 11 1969. I was with kilo co sgt emrick was my plt. sgt michael green was my squad leader. after he was kill i was promoted to squad leader. Patrick McClure (mink we called him ) was helping me over top of greens body when he was shot in the head. I,ll never forget that he looked right at me with his eyes glaring an fell over dead.Glen Plylar was sgt emricks radio operator, he was also wounded that day. I left vietnam the last of june while on operation Pipe Stone Canyon. My brother in the air force got me out early. I always believed he saved my life. We were ambush when eddie locklear was killed an the capt was hit in the throat by shrapnal. I was about three feet from eddie locklear when he was hit in the chest twice he spun around an landed face down in an old fox hole which was mostly filled in,I crawled up to see if he was dead an the gook through a grenade at me it landed in the middle of eddies back. I crawled backward just as fast as i could I was lucky but eddie was so unlucky god rest his soul. Anyway after leaving nam I was sent to okinawa waiting orders I then got orders for the Philipines i spent six months at subic bay an last two years at Quantico.I got out of Marines june 19 1972. Tom, nice tribute to our fallen brothers. I don’t know if you remember me. I was the other corpsman with 3rd pl at that time. I remember that day very well and also the night after when the vc came out of the tunnel. I was on watch just before you. I was also with our new Lt. When he was wounded. There was only 5 of us on that patrol and 3 were wounded. Sgt. Emrick brought another room patrol out to save us. Semper fi to all Jim Richardson

You shepherded me through my first two weeks in the bush - a time I will never forget.

I remember particularly the day a couple days before the Mothers Day Massacre when L/Cpl. Mark S. Anderson - who was attached to us from H&S - tripped a 105 round. He was the first fatality I faced after arriving in Country and, had you not been there to guide me, I don't know how I would have been able to handle it.

From March 1969 to September 6 69 I was a platoon/commander commander for Kilo 3/5. I recognize a bunch of names on this list. It would be great to hear from any or all of you.

I have been in touch with Doug Chapin, Jim Bowen, Tom Leech, and Dave Dietz. All except Tom were wounded and never came back to the company. He was the only one of five of us from the same basic school class that was not wounded. My first Purple Heart came on May 31 and my second one was on September 6. That one put me in the hospital in Guam for 2 1/2 months.

The only reason I am alive today is tow of my favorite group of people (Navy Corpsmen) kept me alive with four pieces of shrapnel in my chest. Yeah, it was a sucking chest wound. I had so much trust in them, that I wouldn’t let the CO call a medevac from the Arizona until morning. We had sat in on a registration point and my CP took fifty-two 61 mm mortar around.

My name is Nick McMcIntosh and had 3rd platoon that day. When Kemper Hock went down, I took over the company. 21 of us from my platoon assaulted across 200 meters of open rice paddies. We went between 2nd platoon on the left and 1st platoon on the right. SSgt Emrick got those of 2nd platoon not wounded or dead up and join us in the assault.

I was moving on the oblique towards 2nd platoon to tell them what we were doing, when I say SSgt Emrick about 15 feet away. I knew he would not have to be told what to do, so I did an about face. There was a tremendous amount of fire right in from of him. When I looked back, I did not see him, so I kept moving my platoon forward.

It was until the fight was over that I found out that SSgt Emrick had taken two rounds in the middle of his chest. There was a radio operator right behind him that was also KIA.

I took over the company when Capt Hock was wounded. During the assault I was 15 feet from SSgt Emrick when he got killed. The bunker that got him had the NVA battalion commander in it. Dan Kenney got one of the NVA with his machine gun, and I got the Commander with a frag.

The Corpsmen were busy as hell and I am sure we would have had more than 8 KIAs had they not done there job. 2nd Lt Jim Bowen (1st Platoon) told me recently about the how badly some were hit. He was supervising the loading of the casualties onto the choppers.

2nd Lt Doug Chapan lives in Ft. Myers, Florida. We were in the same class at The Basic School for Marine Officers and we had a reunion last May. I was the S-3 for the reunion and talked to lot of the class and Doug was one of them.
