David Petraeus accepting the James Madison Medal at Princeton, 2010
Two weeks ago, I wondered whether CIA Director Petraeus was politicizing the intelligence after a source told Fox News on September 27 that three days after the Benghazi assault, Petraeus briefed the House Intelligence Committee that "Benghazi was an out-of-control demonstration prompted by the YouTube video. According to the source, this was `shocking' to some members who were present and saw the same intelligence pointing toward a terrorist attack."
Knowing Petraeus' sensitivities to the faux-stimulus of what he has called in Senate testimony "Arab anger," such politicization, or, perhaps better, such Arabizing of the intelligence would likely come naturally to him. No stranger to politicking, Petraeus as CENTCOM commander engaged in what was described as an "unprecedented"political push in early 2010 on behalf of Islam's Israel-centered demonology in order to enhance Americas's military standing in Iraq and Afghanistan. This dovetailed neatly with his perhaps surprising take on Gitmo -- close it, its "existence has been used by the enemy against us" -- and his really shocking take on Hezbollah: Hezbollahs justifications for existence will become void, Petraeus told the Al Hayat as reported in the Lebanese Daily Star, if the Palestinian cause is resolved. Given this Arabist sensibility (and don't forget one of his thesis directors at Princeton was Stephen Waltof Walt & Mearsheimer), it's no stretch to imagine the man taking up cry of Islamic video-rage as well.
Now, with so many of the adminstration's bald lies about Benghazi being exposed,PJ Tatler's Bryan Preston is asking not whether Petraeus was politicizing the intell, but whether he is "among the sources of the Benghazi deception."
In a post called "You Know Who Still Hasn't Called Benghazi a Terrorist Attack?" Preston reprises some of Petraeus' appeasement of Koran Rage back in Afghanistan. Preston also notes that several senators sent a letter on October 9 to Petraeus, DNI Clapper and White House CT advisor John Brennan asking for a specific timeline on the Benghazi intelligence They haven't received an answer.
Which isn't to say Petraeus hasn't been busy of late. Two weeks ago (September 27), the Daily Princetonian published a story suggesting that the CIA director was interested in becoming president of Princeton -- this after the current president anounced her retirement on the weekend of September 23. Petraeus' response as reported by the college paper?
I think Ive made my respect and admiration for the great faculty and student body of Princeton University very clear, and I will reiterate that now, Petraeus said in the statement. As it currently stands, however, I am living the dream here at CIA.
You don't need a CIA decoder ring to read that as he wants it. Further, with Benghazi's Big Lies crashing around him, I would even interpret the strangely jarring phrase "living the dream here at the CIA" as: Get me out of here. But I wonder how Benghazi-gate will look on his resume? Diana West
Impetus for the founding of the Lebanese Hezbollah came from the Hezbollah Party formed in Iran in 1978 by Hadi Ghaffary, a cleric with close ties to Ayatollah... Khomeini decided to export his Islamic revolution and to form a Hezbollah group among the Shi'ites of Lebanon.Stephen E. Atkins, "Encyclopedia of modern worldwide extremists and extremist groups," p. 130. (Greenwood Publishing Group, 2004) 404 pp.
Not to mention almost all bloody conflicts - all around the globe -- all related to political Islam (Radical Islam against infidels, or Muslim sect A vs Muslim sect B) and NOT related to the Zionist state at all.
Obama, Clinton, Panetta, Patraeus, Biden, Rice, Carney, etc. should all be either impeached or fired!!! “Traitors”. all!!!
Thanks for this. Never trusted the guy—anyone who would support this administration, as he undoubtedly has, in its malign vision for our nation, has gone over to the enemy. I think he spent too much time being brainwashed in academia.
And to think of how many FReepers here were Jonesing for the empty-suit, self-proclaimed ‘Rockefeller Republican’ Petraeus to be our presidential or VP nominee.
IMO that shows the dangers of projecting political positions, virtue and talent upon military officers.
Why is he attending this event? I thought he was under the bus.
petraeus was dirty in Iraq before the surge. The person who had the evidence was murdered in broad daylight and his laptop, (containing the evidence,) was stolen.
Corker Questions Biden Debate Comments On Libyan Terrorist Attack
US officials knew Libya attack was terrorism within 24 hours, sources confirm
DNI’s CYA, er, CO(bama)A statement:
Wow. I’ve always stuck up for the guy because he was my son’s leader in Iraq and I NAIVELY THOUGHT he was a man of integrity. There’s always more than meets the eye with these public figures..
For what it’s worth..not all under his command in Iraq found him...worthy.
Live and learn.
Thanks for the ping.
Sounds like the CIA is as hopelessly politicized as the EPA.
Unbelievable, isn’t it?
A bit OT:
Ben Affleck finds David Petraeus remarkable, is buddies with Huma Abedin
Petraeus was actually on hand, attending an event at the Canadian Embassy and then watching the film alongside other prominent Washingtonians at the movie theater in Chinatown. Also in the crowd were “Argo” cast members John Goodman and Bryan Cranston, along with former Rep. Anthony Weiner and his wife, State Department official Huma Abedin. Affleck explained why he invited his “good friend” Abedin, who in turn brought along her husband. “The reason why she is here, is she was instrumental in helping us shoot at the State Department,” Affleck said. “As you noticed, we shot at the real State Department ... our production designers were allowed to go inside and look at the seventh floor and recreate it.”
I believe you're thinking of Peter Pace, who Bush threw under the bus to appease the rats.
Pace opposed the sodomization of the military, you see.
Ouch—hadn’t heard that.
Of course, Washington generally only likes to have people in power whom they’ve got blackmail material on...
Thanks for the pings, Miss M!
Wow. He gets around, doesn’t he..
I meant last night. Biden threw the intelligence community under the bus on Benghazi.
These are the people [plus Clapper, Brennan] that should be hauled in before Issa'a committee to testify under oath.
So.....Rice, and now Biden, got their info/talking points from Patraeus?
Where did Gen. Dempsey get the idea to call up Rev. Jones? Do top Pentagon generals have the obscure preacher on speed-dial?
Both generals surely raised Jones profile, and along with it, the likelihood that Islamists will target him for harm.
As has been the case since the day of the attacks, something isnt adding up here. Both State and the US intelligence community now say that they never thought Benghazi was any response to a movie. Lt Col Andrew Wood testified Wednesday that based on his military experience, Benghazi was instantly recognizable as terrorism.
But someone influential obviously did not share that view. Who?
Gen Petraeus heads the intelligence community, or at least the CIA part of it. He has not publicly said what he believes regarding the 9-11-12 attacks. The only clue we have to his thoughts on the subject is that report that as of 9-13 he believed it to have been a response to a movie, plus the circumstantial evidence of Gen Dempseys call to Rev. Jones on 9-12.
On Oct 9, a group of senators sent Petraeus, and DNI James Clapper and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a letter asking them all to explain their positions on Benghazi. They have not answered.
