If Chicago public school teachers strike, public education could be undermined
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 30, 2012 | Mary Mitchell

Maybe CTU President Karen Lewis is just rattling her saber by announcing the teachers union has filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike.

....Parents with children in Chicago Public Schools should definitely be putting together an alternative plan given the rhetoric from the union.

“CPS seems determined to have a toxic relationship with its employees,” Lewis said at the news conference. “[T]hey attempted to ram a poorly-thought-out longer school day down our throats . . . It has been insult after insult after insult.”

Now that Lewis has taken the next step toward a showdown, I’m betting there will be drama.

But a strike would not just be devastating for the mayor, teachers, students and parents.

A strike could further undermine public education in this city.

Chicagoans are fed up.

They are fed up with high gas prices and boarded-up homes. They are fed up with rowdy teens, gangs, shootings and homicides. They are fed up with schools that warehouse kids but don’t educate them.

....Increasingly, parents in these struggling communities are discovering options to public education.

That is why thousands lined up to attend the “New Schools for Chicago” fair last spring — desperate to send their kids to a “charter operation.”

The children who are being left behind are the most vulnerable.

So if Mayor Rahm Emanuel has to skip most of the Democratic National Convention next week, then so be it.....

But not "fed up" enough, apparently, to throw out the bums who caused this situation. They'll go to the polls and elect whichever hack the Dem party puts up.

LOL - funny - and it'll freak out Chris Matthews... a twofer.

(Matthews is under the impression that blacks are like gods - gods who can never be criticized or mocked - that marks Chris Matthews as BEING a racist... but he wouldn't understand that...)

Public education was the best in the world, until teachers and public sector employees were given the OK to unionize.

When I was in college, I worked {USSteelworker Union member} at a steel mill that had very high hourly rates as well as some jobs on milling machines that paid bonuses for production over a certain level {piece work}.

The hard workers could make great money by working for their full 8 hour shift, but the union goons would make them slow down via threats and vandalism {it made everyone else work to keep up the pace}.

More than one head got busted and tires slashed and kids threatened to slow or get the hard workers to quit the mill and protect to union loafers.

I couldn't wait to graduate and move on to my real life's work.

Actually, if Chicago Public School teachers go on strike, that's less time for them to damage their “young minds full of mush” and the student welfare is improved.

“Students at the all boys Frederick Douglass Academy were suspended recently for wanting an education and protesting to demand an education.

Almost 50 high school students at Frederick Douglass Academy in Detroit were suspended late March for walking out of their classes in protest of the lack of consistent teacher attendance, wanting the principal removed and a number of other administrative problems at the school.

Students chanted, “We want education!”.......

Public education was the best in the world, until teachers and public sector employees were given the OK to unionize.

It's not just unionization. It's unionization PLUS affirmative action mandating the hiring of incompetent teachers solely in order to make the "numbers" work out, plus demands that black students must be taught by black teachers.

The Public Education System bears the burden of our deteriorating society. ‘warehousing kids instead of educating’ (bring forth from within) fits them to a tee.

Most of those kids won’t do much better in a charter school. Thing is, the only reason they work is they can control who gets in, and kick out the ones that mess up.

Let all of them in, and they will turn the charter schools into the same hell holes the public schools are.

We’re talking about Chicago here where a Republican would have to get about a million more votes than the opponant else Rham and company would just steel the election.

I've met some decent public school teachers, but the majority especially the teachers under 40 are useless and the teachers which left college two or three years are the most useless, incompetent idiots I have ever come across

can’t be public school for those lot as one as a battle flag and kids today are taught they’re bad and racist.
See the piblic schools would rather focus on a confederate flag instead of Math, History, Geography etc.

Yeah, but are they fed up enough to vote corrupt dems out of office? That's the real question

In a word, no. Many people are fed up with the same things we conservatives are, but can't connect the dots. They will still vote for Santa Clause even though he's crapping down their chimney.
