As the final demo of their pre-album release, Cream crafted this polka-march power-ballad instrumental in defiance of the record company who were pressuring them for another commercial single to launch the album (which was still underwraps and in the hands of Felix Pappalardi). While the bridge of this tune is actually a very nice momentary hook, the recurring polka-march it's built on and train-wreck at the end assured it couldn't even be slipped in as a B-side. The stratagy worked in more ways than one and they made it to the release date and Cream became known as a powerhouse blues outfit. They would, however, continue the jokes by slipping silly tunes onto their albums from time to time.

Must retire – the 0500 0430 Reveille approaches relentlessly.

Belay That! I know it's Saturday! No I'm not getting up at 0430, especially since I'm up after 0200! But I am going in today - probably before noon - and I expect to get an eight hour day in. Somebody's got to do it! The bastards are gaining on us!

Our Taskmasters vex us with an ever-increasing burden of work. They have sequestered us in a remote chamber known only as “The Land of the Lost”, which bears a banner over the lintel stating:

“ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE!”

They stand and mutely watch over us as we toil hour upon hour without respite.

The Bugler, their minion, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.

If I can escape their iron grip, I’ll chat with you all on the morrow. I can say no more – they approach!

Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!

Lawdy Mama (BBC 1966)

While never released as a single in the UK, "Lawdy Mama" was released as a two minute single in the US prior to the Fresh Cream debut, but the song wasn't included on the album and was overshadowed when the album was came out. It did become a staple in Cream's early live shows.

Released in November, the Fresh Cream album reached number 6 on the UK charts and number 39 in the United States by Christmas, 1966. The record was evenly split between self-penned originals and American blues covers of legends like Robert Johnson, Skip James, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy and Willie Dixon.

"I Feel Free", written by Peter Brown and Jack Bruce, became a UK hit single and was only included on the American edition of the LP. It's not clear whether the corporate boys in A&R ever figured out that they'd been duped, but instant success meant that never again would the record company try to meddle in the band's development. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Success also meant they were truly free.
