A heterosexual man in Denver claims that a Best Buy employee wrongly "outed" him on Facebook after he left his phone for repair.
Rich Dewberry said he brought in his mobile device to get fixed and was given a new phone. Shortly afterward, his Facebook status read, "I am gay, I'm coming out."
"The phone just started ringing constantly after that from [an] ex-spouse to friends," he told ABC's Denver affiliate, KMGH.
Dewberry said he was logged into his Facebook account on the phone he left with the store.
"I feel I have been humiliated. My reputation has been tarnished," he said.
"Just having to explain it to certain people that I haven't been in contact for a while," he said. "I feel I shouldn't have to do that."
Dewberry filed a complaint with the store, which told him the employee was fired, he said. Best Buy provided a statement to KMGH:

(Unless it had happened to me.)
I find it funny as well. The only part that isn’t funny is access to personal data.
I have tried multiple times to get into my one friends facebook to “update” his status. Sadly, he is very fervent on logging out.
So is it "wrongly" or "falsely". There is quite a bit of difference.
"I feel I have been humiliated. My reputation has been tarnished," he said.
Oooo, the pink mafia isn't going to like his attitude.
Having worked when younger at stores, I’m not saying this is the case, but the “customer” may have been a total jerk, which may have tempted a young employee to do this. Not that it is the correct thing to do.
“I’m out?? But I was never in!”
(Seinfeld ping)
The ‘good’ news here?
1. Somebody still thinks that being outed is a matter of reputation.
2. There’s no follow-up from a miffed gay activist to the contrary.
Can someone be "rightly" outed?
nttawwt
Of course, this is practical joking amongst friends. Not quite the same thing as taking a device in for servicing and paying good money for professional work.
The story does have a bit of humor to it but an employee should not have been fired over the situation (at least as I understand the situation).
The guy that had the wrong message go out about him should have just taken the time to let his friends know that he was not gay, get a good chuckle out of it and move on.
People are way too sensitive. Even if it was upsetting to the guy whose phone told people he was gay was upset, to have an employee lose their job over it, that’s not right.
Maybe I missed something in the story. If the employee did it as a prank, then of course he should be fired for that.
But, lastly, why is this man going to the media to out himself if he is so ashamed of his little secret? Aren't far more people going to learn his leanings by running to the media than if he had just fixed the page as quickly as he could and blaming the error on a prankster or a security breach?
There's something about this whole story that doesn't add up to me. "I'm so ashamed of my closet lifestyle that I'm going to run to a tv station to protest this disclosure." It's like running to the cops to tell them your drug deal went bad.
Thanks for that humor!!
get over it.
Aren’t all navy types gay? I thought it was a requirement.
Yeah stupid sailor let his gay **** hang out for all to see on facebook. How retarded is that?? Welcome to the new Obama America
I’d say it’s wrongly AND falsely.
I never knew Navy guys talked about sex. My dear old departed Leatherneck dad used to say that Navy ships have Marine guards because virgins in white dresses require escorts on the high seas. ;)
Look how ABC posted a photo of whom I presume to be the victim but captioned it as if it were a photo of the bad employee. That guy just can’t get a break, can he?
