PHILADELPHIA -- Miami Marlins manger Ozzie Guillen will apologize again for telling a magazine he loves Fidel Castro.
Guillen will return to Florida following Monday's game at Philadelphia and apologize Tuesday at Marlins Park. The Phillies and Marlins are off Tuesday before the series resumes Wednesday.
Guillen had told Time magazine he loves the Cuban leader and respects him for staying in power so long. The manager said before Monday's game he's had sleepless nights because of his comments and wants to make amends.
"I'm going to make everything clear what's going on," he said. "People can see me and talk. I've already talked to people. But I think it's the proper thing to see my eyes. They can see me and ask whatever question they want. I think sooner is better. Better for the ballclub, better for me."
He apologized over the weekend after the story broke last week.
A Cuban-American group planned a demonstration Tuesday at the ballpark. The protest was organized before Guillen said he would fly to Miami.
"I know I hurt a lot of people," Guillen said. "I want to get the thing over with."
Guillen said the news conference would be open to "anybody that wants to be there."
It’s Ozzie located in the solar system of Ozzie.
It’s a free country but the guy’s mouth should still have to register with the authorities in whatever state he visits.
Typical Ozzie - engages mouth before engaging mind - but my guess is that stupid, off-the-cuff comment does not mean that he really admires that Cuban hangman.
Ozzie made a somewhat similar idiotic statement about Hugo Chavez right after the Sox won the Series in 2005; in pretty much every statement afterwards he has really come down hard on Chavez, and I believe sincerely so. And that’s not to excuse his initial favorable comments on either Castro or Chavez - that’s just Ozzie.
Two other bits about Ozzie: a couple of my young relatives went to see the White Sox training camp during spring training back when the Sox trained in Sarasota, and Guillen was their starting shortstop. They came by one day when it was raining; every player on the team rushed past the kids as they waited for them, except for one who stopped to sign their autograph books in the rain: that one was Ozzie Guillen.
And speaking of Rocker, Ozzie once referred to a notorious Chicago sportswriter (who was in fact a true horse’s @ss) by using a homosexual slur; MLB fined him and sentenced him to sensitivity training. I always loved it when I found out later that Ozzie had said the sensitivity training was a load of manure (or Ozzieisms to that effect).
I have my suspicions as to why Ozzie made that stupid comment about Castro, but then again, even if I’m right, that doesn’t excuse him from saying something that stupid.
actually quite the opposite...if you look at his comments from 10 years ago when he was manager of the white sox he said he loved chavez, whom he considered a personal friend...these comments should not surprise anyone as guillen is just another leftist loving millionaire in America...
Ozzie Guillen is a putz!
Well that explains it. Doesn't give much credibility to his mea culpa. He must love our own power hungry dictator.
“What I meant to say was that I love Fidel Castro, because he had electric stuff that would have made him a great addition to my starting rotation. If I had been managing the Washington Senators back then, I would have signed him”.
Will he be apologizing for loving Fidel? Will he be apologizing for saying it out loud? Will he apologize for being the dumbest Cuban in America?
I suspect he is pretty sincere about wanting to get the whole thing over with. I also suspect he revealed his true thoughts when he opened his yap the first time.
Watchu talkin’ ‘bout, Willis? He’s not Cuban.
Watchu talkin’ ‘bout, Willis? He’s not Cuban.
“He’ not Cuban.” Not that there’d be anything wrong with that...
Ozzie had destroyed that with his stupid comments.
If he stays, many Cubans are not going to support the team.
Ozzie Guillen who?
