Oprah Winfrey may want to consider giving away a few more free cars to help her struggling cable network.
The car giveaway episode aired in 2004, when she was at the height of her TV career hosting “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” seemed to be what everyone was talking about back then. Even Oprah said the event was “one of my all-time favorite happiest moments ever” as she put it recently on the Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN.
Alas, it's unhappy times for Winfrey's OWN right now. In recent days the network announced it was pulling the plug on “The Rosie Show” and embarking on a major restructuring, including laying off 30 employees of its 150-person staff.
“It is difficult to make tough business decisions that affect people’s lives,” said Winfrey, CEO and chief creative officer of the network, in a statement, “but the economics of a start-up cable network just don’t work with the cost structure that was in place.”

She owned the show Oprah and could have used it as an advertising medium to raise awareness while developing full programming that enhance her brand while lifting new entertainers and grooming them for success.
Rosies schtick was old in 1997.
OWN recently asked our production studio here in L.A. to submit a bid to produce their show. We met with OWN mgmt. believe it or not in regards to a game show and it was a rip- off of American Idol, combined with a Marilyn Manson video. Even asked the liberals on our staff how to fix this mess and even they couldn’t.
Give away more cars? No way! She would have to pay for them out of her OWN pocket!

Her cable network is in a premium pricing tier, iirc, not a basic cable channel, or even a basic digital channel.
That was the analysis at the first announcement of OWN, long before all the heads started rolling at Discovery and Harpo.
She had a sure thing. I don’t understand throwing away such success in your late 50s.
She could always sell jewelry on QVC......./s

How can such a smart woman THINK that people WANT to watch Rosie O'Donnell? Hubris? Ignorance?
I used to think that Oprah was a pretty decent person for Hollywood. Then she went all out to help Obama get elected, purely on the basis of his color. That finished her for me.
150 person staff for a whole network? She probably had more than that on her old show.
OWN has no programming that is different enough to draw a big enough audience to make a go of it
Why copy another show?
I have an idea for a game show that would be interesting
Give a show to Monica Crowley, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham.
Station wouldn’t now what to do with all that cash.
I always thought that to give hour-long weekday TV shows to talk radio guys would attract an audience and be relatively cheap to produce and can be rerun again later in the day.
I’d pick Michele Malkin, Mark Steyn, Laura Ingraham etc for those shows and bring them all together for a weekend gabfest.
