Poll: Romney Clings To Lead Over Santorum in Arizona By Jonathan Easley - 02/15/12 Mitt Romney leads the GOP presidential field in Arizona, but Rick Santorum is closing in fast, according to a poll released on Wednesday by the American Research Group.

Romney leads with 38 percent, followed by Santorum at 31 percent, Newt Gingrich at 15 percent and Ron Paul at 11 percent.

In the same poll conducted in late January, Romney and Gingrich were tied for the lead in Arizona at 32 percent, while Santorum was mired in fourth place at 10 percent.

On Feb. 28, voters in Arizona and Michigan will head to the polls for the GOP presidential primaries.

According to an ARG poll in Michigan released earlier this week, Santorum leads with 32 percent, followed by Romney at 27 percent.

Romney, whose father George Romney was once governor of Michigan, was widely viewed as having an insurmountable advantage in the Wolverine State because of his close ties there, but Santorum has vaulted into contention on the strength of his surprising three-state caucus sweep last week in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri.

Does anyone remember the Freepers suggestions of something that Rick could say in the debates that would make Mittens go postal?

It was something about his father and Wash.DC? Whoever posted it said that to the average ear it would sound harmless but it would mean alot to those who knew George Romney...and again, cause Rombo to froth.
Just wanted it for my “file” of usable tidbits.

And the election is kaput if Santorum is the nominee.

Last USA-Gallup, Santorum was 4 points behind Obama and Gingrich was 15 points Obama. If it isn’t Santorum, its Romney.

Believe me, I hope that whomever the nominee is, a Republican wins. I just don’t think enough independents will pull for Santorum. Same with Gingrich. The press will eat them alive.

Romney, fortunately or unfortunately (depends on how you feel about him), I believe, is the only one that can outlast the media’s attacks. His centricity (or flip-flopping) may drive Conservatives crazy, but it is still infinitely better than four more years of failure.

Although, Paul is one of those “he’s so crazy he just might win” candidates...

“Saint Rick” better stay out of AZ: that state is a hopeless cause for anyone but McPain.

Half of Newt’s supporters in AZ have deserted him. You just can’t depend on AZ, as Newt will see.

Fun to see one of the few Romney supporters still here at FR. I thought all you guys were gone.

Obama is going for class war. In this economy, Romney’s $100M trust fund for his kids will not withstand Obama and his super pacs.

Come on. Romney is getting kid-glove treatment now and he can't handle the press. What do you think it is going to be like if he is the actual Republican nominee.

Attacks on Romney’s fortune will hurt him. However, the only thing those attacks promote is envy. Eventually, the average person will realize that envy is not a logical reason to vote against someone.

However, the attacks on Santorum will be based on fear. The media will attempt to label Santorum as anti-woman... back-alley abortions, etc. Fear will keep female voters from voting for Santorum.

Romney may have trouble battling those attacks, but there is nothing Santorum could say to assuage those fears once the media attaches them to him.

Gosh, I thought you were making a nasty dig at a Newt supporter, but dgcoronado really is a romneybot.

I'm surprised that anyone could be supporting the candidate who has a 20 year history of running, and has a single win to his name.

You can hope that it is Romney if you don’t get Santorum, supposedly that is true for most Santorum supporters, but conservatives will still support the freerepublic candidate Newt Gingrich.

Support is one thing, reality and electability is another. While both Santorum and Romney are with 8-9 points of Obama, Gingrich is behind Obama by nearly twice that margin. As Krauthammer has written, a second term Obama will lead to a nation we won’t recognize. In this household its anyone but Obama. Obama must be defeated.

You are relying on useless polling, you making the case for Mitt Romney blows the cover off your hard nosed anti-Gingrich efforts, and it shows why you were starting to go after Palin as irrelevant.

Mittens may be forced to go megadeath on Santorum to keep from actually getting blown out of the race with losses in Arizona and Michigan. That means that Newt may pull into their slipstream and do a lot better than expected.
