Deputy Medical Examiner Dr Robert Pfalzgraf later noted in his autopsy report that, two days after his death, brown-orange liquid pepper spray was still all over Christie's body.
Pfalzgraf ruled the death a homicide, as Christie's heart gave out due to stress from his exposure to pepper spray. An internal investigation concluded there no wrongdoing on the part of any Lee County deputy.
None of the deputies involved were disciplined in any way and Florida State Attorney Stephen Russell declined to press criminal charges.
A mentally ill grandfather died after police officers strapped him naked to a chair, smothered him with a 'spit hood' and pepper-sprayed him 10 times during a 43-hour ordeal, it has been claimed.
Nick Christie, 62, was allegedly tortured in the 'Devil's Chair' at Lee County jail after being detained by Florida police officers in March 2009 following a 'mental breakdown'.

The final 30 minutes of John Rambo’s “activities” in First Blood come to mind...
Another FR poster said about another case, “Now we have thousands of roided-up paramilitary goons who think theyre living an episode of The Shield, treating us all like were MS-13 gangbangers on a three-day meth high.”
I support good cops and proper, constitutional procedures. I don’t ask that cops take unnecessary risks. However, this appears to be completely over the top.
This happened 2 1/2 years ago..
Except for Monshay Gibbs, who testified, none have been identified.
Who else was involved.
Puts abu graib in perspective doesn’t it.
Prayers for his family.
“Tell the truth, warts and all” —the job of the press. BUT NOW, when you want to hear the REAL USA news, you must read a BRITISH newspaper.
Is it any wonder that the really huge scandals in the USA are now broken by former gift-shop clerks & high-school kids...?
When Abu Graib broke, the NYT carried it on page 1 above the fold for THIRTY-TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS. For how long will we hear of Piss Gate?
HA.
When we get consistent coverage of the real news we will have TWO COMPLETELY SEPERATE MEDIA SYTEMS.
Replace Police Officers with MARINES and there would be outrage and the whole
department would be arrested and under investigation.
The would call it the "Florida 25" in the media.
Question. Was this man pepper sprayed while restrained in the chair? With the spit hood still covering his head? If so, why? He was already unable to hurt himself or staff. Evil. Obviously, the justice system in this town is too entrenched to work. As much as I despise Holder’s DOJ, the feds need to step into this mess.
This poor guy was sent to Florida on vacation by his wife, while he’s there she calls the cops and has him picked up for acting depressed, he ends up in custody probalby pissed off as hell and dies in the process. Why isn’t the wife being prosecuted for her involvement? I bet the cops killed him hoping they would get a crack at that bitch too!
Can’t a family member initiate a citizen’s arrest?
They must think highly of us in the foreign press that they publish this stuff and our press not even a peep..
But water boarding a head-chopping terrorist is "torture."
We should do the above to the majority of our politicians.
I support the police, but not police misconduct.
-——The hood, designed to stop him from spitting at officers-——
Since the hood did not come with a warning label, the manufacturers are liable and toast.
Henceforth if the kids don’t get all the hood manufacturing companies money, the hoods will carry three or four warning labels.
The same may be true for the manufacturer of the spray stuff. although it likely contains warning labels, it likely doesn’t have a label advising not to spray in conjunction with a spit hood. The spray maker is also toast.
The county is likely broke and hard to sue. Best to go after the deep pockets and easy pickings.
Except, if the hoods and spray were purchased with law enforcement grant money from the Feds, then the feds might be liable and they have big deep pockets
This article made me want to puke.
Good thing he was an American grandpa and not a terrorist. If he was a terrorist, the DOJ'd be suing him for torture. Oh, American citizen? Christian? Move along, nothing to see here.
