David Cameron has three weeks to decide whether to bless a new eurozone treaty or use Britains veto and place the country in a very grave position, a senior observer warned last night.
Peter Ludlow, president of the European Strategy Forum think tank, said Germany and France are confident they will secure a deal to save the long‑term future of the euro by the end of this month.
That would mean tougher financial rules for members of the eurozone and the use of existing EU institutions to enforce them, a move Mr. Cameron has indicated is a step too far.
However, veteran EU analyst Mr. Ludlow said one very senior member of the European Council had told him that if Britain were to try to block the deal it would be tantamount to a declaration of war.
He said: If Cameron is stupid enough to try and block the use of the institutions, it would be a very, very dramatic development which could only have grave consequences in terms of Britains own interests. It would be his nuclear weapon and thats why all the messages I get from various people give the impression he will not do that.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy want a new fiscal compact that commits countries to running a balanced budget.
They want the rules enshrined in EU law so that sanctions can be levied on any member breaching them.
That would mean a bigger role for the European Court of Justice and unelected European Commission, which would also have a larger say on the single market, not just matters relating to the euro.

On the one hand the grumbles of war are for the olde traditional motivation but on the other an “old fashioned shooting war” between PC forces would be sad or a laugh, depending.
They declare war on Britain while claiming it’s the other way around - looks like some Obama supporters in the EU.
Peter Ludlow is feeling backed into a corner...by Brussels hubris....
If the Brits need some Americans to help fight the EU... I’m in!

SNORT.
With them and whose army?
If the eu died tomorrow... it would be in everyone’s interest... it was born of evil and is evil.

It seems that the EU is showing that it is really a ‘soft tyranny’ of bureaucrats. But no matter how you slice it, it is still Tyranny.
If there is to be a “United States of Europe” then the states probably need to agree on the basics and Britain should go along. However it looks like the UK got a good look and now wants say, No Thanks. I don’t blame them.
CRIPPLE FIGHT!
Bluster.
Except for the significant percentage that would be within the armed forces. Now there is a real nightmare scenario.
Shouldn’t that be £ sand?
1. “...a new fiscal compact that commits countries to running a balanced budget.” ==> Members of the EU are already required to run a balanced budget. New rules will be ignored just as easily as the old rules. Or worse - unenforced laws can be selectively enforced on those who oppose your political goals.
2. “...They want the rules enshrined in EU law so that sanctions can be levied on any member breaching them...” ==> They must be referring to the meter-thick EU Constitution. Again, just a vast set of rules to be selectively enforced to suit the political agenda of those in charge of the rules.
3. “That would mean a bigger role for the European Court of Justice and unelected European Commission, which would also have a larger say on the single market, not just matters relating to the euro” ==> An unelected commission, with even more power, selectively enforcing rules that will be tried by an outside group.
The UK would be insane to sign on to this. This has ceased to be an economic union
I think what they have is more like the Articles of Confederation of Europe. It didn't work for us, and it won't work for them.
Double SNORT. My first thought. If the Brits give in, they are truly lost. One of the "benefit" of European Union is their suicidal Open Borders policy. Muslims would flood into France and then to the UK.
Mr. David Cameron, are you a lion at the head of an army of sheep? Or, are you a sheep at the head of an army of lions? Which is it, sir?
