KFC digs up 'secret' Col. Sanders manuscript
CTVNews ^ | 10 Nov 2011 | Vanessa Greco

The man who founded Kentucky Fried Chicken apparently had one more trick up the sleeve of his ubiquitous white jacket.

But this time around, its page-flippin' – not finger-lickin' – good.

Col. Harland Sanders, the mustachioed face behind fast-food chicken goliath KFC, is said to have penned an autobiography that chronicles his love of food and even shares some of his personal recipes.

KFC announced Thursday that a company employee stumbled across the "hidden" manuscript at a storage facility in Louisville, Kentucky.

"We've uncovered a new secret of the Colonel's and we want to share it with millions of KFC fans around the world," KFC Corp. CEO Roger Eaton said in a prepared statement.

But the world's fried chicken fans will have to wait for the Colonel's musings. KFC has decided to release the "food autobiography" next year.

In a plot that's thicker than a Double Down Sandwich, KFC said it plans to lock the manuscript in the same vault that houses the Colonel's trademarked original chicken recipe.

According to KFC, anyone who wants to be privy to the original autobiography or the Colonel's "secret mix of 11 herbs and spices" will have to crack open a custom-made fireproof safe that weighs more than 770 lbs.

Sanders is considered a pioneer in the realm of fast-food chicken.

Though he took an interest in cooking as early as age six, the "Colonel" built his chicken empire relatively late in life. At age 65, he turned a $105 social security cheque into the company that would come to be known as KFC.

By the time he died in 1980, Sanders had spent several decades on the road visiting his restaurants worldwide.

Post 16: Know what you mean. They closed down the one here a month or two ago because it was nasty. A dump.

Believe me, his chicken was good 40 years ago. Now it is inedible.

I’ve heard similar stories about Sam Walton. Legend has it that he would walk into a store wearing faded work clothes and wander around, observing the employees and their interactions with the customers.

***there really was a Colonel Sanders! ***

I met the man in 1969 in Jacksonville, Arkansas when I went into the store to get a box of chicken. He was handing out small recipe booklets, which I still have, and I had him autograph the one he gave me.

He was on his way to the Arkansas-Longhorns game in Fayetteville the next day. Arkansas lost.

His chicken was good when he was alive. A free whole cherry pie with a bucket on Washington’s birthday.

Now, it is disgusting! And no pie!

***Flour, salt, pepper, and MSG. The real secret is the pressure cooker they fry it in.***

I talked with a man who operated a KFC back in 1966. He would not tell me what spices and such they used but he did tell me that they fried the chicken, then put it in a pressure cooker.

I remember seeing a photo of Sanders and Minnie Pearl cooking chicken together. I think it was the Johnny Carson show. Minnie Pearl later came out with her own franchises of MINNIE PEARL’S FRIED CHICKEN. It was good, but went bankrupt after a few years.

Colonel Sanders on What's My Line

This is a clip of the Colonel on "What's My Line" from 50 years ago. None of the city slickers on the panel have a clue as to who he is.

When KFC stopped using trans fats and started making "gravy" from a powdered mix, it was all downhill. No more crispy skin, and wallpaper paste on the fake mashed potatoes.

And yes, it's true about the Colonel taking his product very seriously. If he found out that a franchisee wasn't doing it HIS way, he would literally take the fryers away from them. He wouldn't tolerate someone putting out an inferior product under his name. Dave Thomas, the Wendy's founder got his start under Sanders. He also felt the same way about his own restaurants.

***I’ve heard similar stories about Sam Walton. Legend has it that he would walk into a store wearing faded work clothes and wander around,****

I used to shop at his store (WALTON’S 5 & 10) in Bentonville as a child. The last time I saw him was in the early 1990s at the Rogers Ar Walmart. He died not long after.

Two true interesting stories;

My sister came up here and took my mom for a ride to Bentonville and Rogers. For some reason they decided to go and see where Sam lived. They found the place, and pulled into the driveway to turn around. An old truck pulled in behind them, stopped and waited till they got turned around to leave. The driver of the old truck was...Sam Walton.

***
Several years back my wife and I took a trip to the Colordo Rockies. We stopped in Starkville, CO, just south of Trinidad, and went into their new WALMART. The workers there were at our feet, Helping us find what we needed, and when the photo developing machine broke down, they apologized and fixed it, then gave me my prints free.

My wife wondered why they were being so friendly to us, and I said...”Look at the jacket you are wearing.”

On the back of her jacket was ARKANSAS RAZORNBACKS. They must have thought we were “spies” there to check up on them.

In a relatively small town in Indonesia I encountered a hand cart food stall with KANTUKY FRIED CHIKEN lettered on it.
And a picture of the Colonel in shrink wrap tacked to it.
Honest I have a picture.

Why do I crave KFC once a year???

I have a strong stomach, but I know I’m going to get sick anyway.

It’s a great mystery.

Sort of like wondering why a dog eats grass.
