Mocking one's accusers really isn't the same as dignifying the accusations with repeated denials. It's like when a FR thread degenerates from real conversation to name-calling. At a certain point, you want to let the other party know you're blowing them off, but if you just disappear, that sends the wrong message, so you dig in and just keep beating them back with content-free snark until they get the point. That way they know they're not getting anywhere, you haven't conceded anything, but neither are you wasting yours and everyone else's time pretending to take it seriously.
