"The Book of Mormon" debuted this year as a Broadway hit that won nine Tonys, and the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nomination features not one, but two candidates of the Mormon faith.
Now the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is launching a major expansion of its "I'm a Mormon" advertising campaign, which, church officials say, seeks to educate the public and dispel myths about one of the fastest-growing religions in the world.
Beginning this week, a dozen U.S. cities in seven states will be targeted by the Salt Lake City-based church with ads on television, city buses and billboards inviting visitors to the church's website to learn about its beliefs and followers.
Users who log onto mormon.org can see profiles of Mormons from various walks of life, chat with church members and learn about Mormon practices, such as the prohibition against consuming alcohol, coffee and tea.
"Many people are not familiar with our faith, and that can sometimes lead to misconceptions," said David Evans, an elder who oversees the church's global network of 52,000 missionaries. "The best way to understand Mormons is to meet them and get to know them personally. These ads are an invitation to do that."
The church, boasting a membership of 14 million worldwide, including 6 million U.S. followers, has gained new attention in the American mainstream this year from Broadway to the White House campaign trail.
Public opinion polls in recent years have shown large blocs of Americans hold an unfavorable view of the religion, whose image problems are partly rooted in the faith's historical connection with polygamy.
An early tenant of the Mormon faith, plural marriage was renounced by the church more than a century ago, although it is still practiced by members of some breakaway sects.
That legacy has

Well in a way yes, he did copy much of the Bible and it is ancient. He also copied other early 19th Century writings such as those of Spaulding.
“Translated” is a tick of a stretch but if you want to use the term go ahead.

No religion that denies the Book of Mormon can be true. Jesus Christ brought forth this book. You are rejecting something you dont understand.
You don't understand that Christians will reject false gospels and false prophets. We will not support a Mormon for President. I sometimes wonder if that's why the MSM loves Romney, they know that many Christians will not support a false Christian any more than they would support a Muslim or Scientologist.

First of all the main stream media HATES Romney with a passion. Where have you been? Furthermore, I have read not a few articles about evangelicals softening their stance about Mormons. I was hoping that the days of “I wouldn’t vote for a Mormon (or Jew or Catholic)” were over . . . but guess not. It has been said that JFK lost about one million votes simply because he was a Catholic.

Privately they may hate him, but they have to be tempted by somebody on the right with an issue that many Conservatives will not support. Obama is really hurting election-wise and could use the help.
I don't think it will reach that point - Romney has hit his cap of supporters and that needle won't budge much.
I was hoping that the days of I wouldnt vote for a Mormon (or Jew or Catholic) were over . . . but guess not.
You're seriously going to compare LDS to Judaism or Catholicism?

First of all the main stream media HATES Romney with a passion.Sorry. I think this comment should be sourced and linked. Give us just ONE indication that the media hates Romney...remember, the mormon church is now hand-in-secret handshake with the Washington Post.

I can do google research, too, and come up with the same amount of stories to make my point. Blah blah blah. I can also search the Holy Bible and make it say whatever I want it to say to make my point. However, I don’t play those games.

‘You’re seriously going to compare LDS to Judaism or Catholicism?”
Yes, there are people who say the same things about Jews and Catholics; i.e., “I would never vote for a Catholic” or “I would never vote for a Jew”. In fact that is exactly what about one million Americans said about JFK - that they would never vote for a Catholic and they didn’t.
Somehow or other it is OK to disrespect and insult Mormons by saying that - for some people anyhow, although I think the number of bigots is dwindling in that regard.

It should be simple, since you state: "I can do google research, too, and come up with the same amount of stories to make my point. Blah blah blah"

I think that’s funny seeing as how I have been condemned to hell by posters on this site so many times I can’t even begin to count them.

So, let me see if I have this right.
“seeing as how [you’ve] been condemned” that is all the justification you need to be judgemental while accusing others of being judgemental at the same time. A supposed wrong begets a wrong.
Yet, you mormons have no problem obfuscating the true eternal destiny of many who don’t believe in the false “prophet” of mormonism.
Many condemned to the mormon version of hell because they don’t follow the tenets of mormonism.
I don’t think it’s “funny” at all.
It’s hypocritical.
But you just keep right on being judgemental Sandy.
Now that I know you believe you’re justified in judging a woman as “evil” for throwing water on a mormon (based on hearsay), I’ll keep on reminding you and the others of what the Bible says.

Over and over and over and over again folks on this site have said that I and all members of my church are members of a cult, that we are not Christians, that we are eternally lost, that our souls are doomed, etc., etc., etc., etc. These are all euphemisms for “Saundra, you are going straight to hell”.
It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I state my sincere Testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and my belief in Him and my love for Him.

I’m not sure why you care what other people think. If you are comfortable and happy in your own faith that should be all that matters. I understand your frustration and sadness at being treated unfairly after years of being a Freeper in good standing, but you are going to have to see it for what it is.
I think a lot of people around here are going to be surprised when there time comes, who goes to hell and who doesn’t.
There are good people and bad people in all religions. As long as a religion isn’t trying to take down the US or harm other people, I have no problem with it. I may not understand it, but there are lots of things I don’t understand.
I actually admire you for your staying power. Most people would have given up and left a long time ago.
