The man who wrote the Maryland state song thought that Maryland was a Southern state. Roger Taney was from Maryland--he was considered a Southerner. The deal that resulted in the nation's capital being located between Maryland and Virginia presupposed that Maryland was part of the South.

Remember JFK's description of Washington--a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm.

Along the east coast, "The South" refers to those states south of Mason's and Dixon's line.

Where do you suppose that line is? Where do you suppose Maryland is, in relation to it?
