KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) The top commander for NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan says the Kabul attack has left 27 dead including Afghan police, civilians and insurgents.
The 20-hour assault in the heart of the Afghan capital ended on Wednesday morning.
U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John Allen says of those killed, 11 were Afghan civilians, with more than half of them children. Allen says five Afghan police officers were also killed.
He says that 11 insurgents also died in the battle, seven of them in the clearing operation inside the building where the attackers were holed up near the U.S. embassy. Four other attackers served as suicide bombers. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Is there any particular reason the dead are being lumped together as opposed to being separated as to whether they are friend or foe? Seriously, I want to know how many of the dead were the attackers (insurgents/Taliban) and how many were Afghan police/Civilians.
The important thing is they were all F ghani’s. Otherwise there is no difference. We should encourage and facilitate their mutual slaughter.
At least six Afghans four police officers and two civilians died across the city in what was a coordinated attack that started Tuesday, the Kabul police department said. By Wednesday morning, all assailants, including at least six in the building close to the U.S. embassy, were dead.
Two or three of the assailants had held out overnight in the unfinished, 11-story high-rise at a major traffic circle in the capital, but were killed in the final morning assault by Afghan forces, said Hashmat Stanekzai, a spokesman for the Kabul police chief.
There is no clear break down as to the number of casualties and the reporting seems confused maybe because the events are chaotic. Not good news that the enemy after a decade can conduct a multilevel attack like this in the heart of the capital and aimed at the unfinished giant U S Embassy building.
It was a good thing to publically announce we were getting out without making glass first ... right?
Easy my FRiend...I’ve served and worked there, and consider many Afghans as friends and brothers.
You paint with too broad a brush in my opinion.
No, it’s not good news. However, it should be of note that the Taliban didn’t do much in the way of damage with respect to the number of casualties. If only six of the 27 were Police and Civilians, then 21 of the dead are Taliban. The odds do not favor the Taliban.
Yeah.
I had a friend who just returned. Worked for 2 years as a civilian mechanic for Spec Ops teams.
I “teased” him about sucking off that big government entitlement tit. He agreed, but, as he said. At least it was someone you know (and love) getting it.
Let’s cut off the entitlements. And blow the F ghans all to hell.
...including Afghan police, civilians and insurgents...
