Rick Perry: The God-Fearing, Know-Nothing, Pistol-Packing Embodiment of Liberals’ Worst Nightmares
The New Republic ^ | August 24, 2011 | Walter Shaperio

Posted on 08/24/2011 2:42:54 AM PDT by Zakeet

What Rick Perry has achieved in his inaugural strut on the political stage is unprecedented in the annals of modern conservative history from Barry Goldwater to Sarah Palin. It is not just that the Texas governor has dominated the news cycle, overshadowed the Iowa Straw Poll, vaulted over every GOP contender except Mitt Romney in the national polls, and reduced Karl Rove to sputtering frustration. All that is admittedly impressive for a first-time candidate whose name was familiar to only half of Republican voters just a few weeks ago.

But what sets Perry apart and earns him his niche in the far right corner of Mount Rushmore has nothing to do with the gyrations of the 2012 campaign. Indeed, Perry is not only a presidential candidate, but also a cowboy-booted sociological experiment. It is almost as if Perry’s political persona was constructed by bundling together all the fears and phantoms in the left-wing anxiety closet. Since the hysteria of the 1950s Red Scare, no Republican figure has matched Perry in his God-given ability to give liberals the heebie-jeebies. Others can rival the governor’s disdain for academic achievement (Palin), his cross-on-the-sleeve religiosity (Michele Bachmann and Mike Huckabee), and his antipathy to Social Security and Medicare (Paul Ryan and Barry Goldwater). But never before has a top-tier presidential candidate embodied the whole lethal package—and more:

There were other candidates who Libs both hated and feared. Reagan and Bush. That’s because Libs knew they could win.

And, it doesn’t hurt that he looks like Reagan. I like him, too. He is a real man and he seems to understand what is going on in this nation. Anyone who doesn’t bow before the false God of Political Correctness gets my attention right away.

And some seem to forget, when they rail about his Democrat past, that Reagan also started as a Democrat and turned out to be a Gem. Theres something about the truly reformed that sometimes transcends the "always was".

After reading the whole article, you might have appended a (Pillow biter alert!). Just to be clear, I am for the restoration of the Old Republic. I'm not sure what the "New" Republic is supposed to be, but, I'm pretty sure I'm agin' it.

Example: Writer dismisses out of hand the very idea of repeal of the 16th and 17th Amendments, both of which were building blocks for the so-called "New" Republic. I believe that discussion needs to be conducted.

Perry has gotten more negative press in one week than Romney has in one year.

It’s all you need to know.

You’re mixing your metaphor characters but it is a good one. Hope Doc Perry sweats HuckleBarry and we get to watch. Then, pop! And Doc just lights up and walks away.

Any Republican who gives Walter Shapiro the heebie-jeebies especially on gun rights, can’t be all bad.

BTW, they’re already quasi-praising George W as an intellectual moderate compared to “cowboy” Perry.

That “cowboy” epithet really hurt Ronald Reagan, didn’t it?

And watch for “Perry hates black people and wants to blow up the world!” next. That sure worked for Jimmah Carter.

Thanks!

“I’m your huckleberry.”

I see Perry as the Right’s “huckleberry” as in, “the one we’re looking for.”

So I took that to mean, Perry isn’t what Barry is looking for.

I imagine I’ve really mixed it up now!

LOL

Help!

>>> Perry has gotten more negative press in one week than Romney has in one year. It’s all you need to know.

But most of the people spreading it seem to be partisans of the candidate they thought to have a divine right to be “undefeated” for the nomination. That says something too.

With a little Paulist mischief making thrown in out or habit.
