Obama Approval Goes Underwater in Democratic New York (49% disapproval in New York)
abc ^ | 8/13/2011 | Devin Dwyer

More voters in the heavily Democratic state of New York now disapprove of President Obama than approve of him – the first time he has ever received a negative rating – according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

The 49 to 45 percent split reflects growing popular angst over the country’s economic woes and frustration with Obama’s response, even in one of his electoral strongholds. In June, New Yorkers approved of the president by a 57 to 38 percent split.

Overall, New Yorkers split fairly evenly on whether Obama deserves re-election. His strongest support is concentrated in New York City and among union households, while majorities of upstate and suburban voters strongly say Obama does not deserve a second term.

Well, at least he will always hold HI, Il and CA. The rest may be total toss up swing states to the Right by the middle of next summer.

Is it because 51% have seen the light and become conservative or because he was not liberal enough? An example would have been in 06 when Bush was pushing amnesty. If I had been asked at that point I would have said I disapproved. Doesn’t make me a liberal though.

Meh. It’s because the liberals don’t think he is liberal enough. New York isn’t suddenly getting some sense and moving to the Right. Obama takes NY. This is not the place to focus.

It doesn’t really matter in the end because lower approval ratings amongst the base leads to less turnout. Given that conservative voters are highly motivated to get out and vote in return, that’s a deadly combination and is pretty much the only recipe that will see a state like NY go GOP.

Nah.

Obama is just like the rest, Gore, Kerry, Pelosi etc but better.
These are human beings that are far to intelligent for the rest of us to recognize.
If anything this poll does nothing but strengthen the assumption that we as a whole are just too dumb and un-educated to understand the nuances our president puts forth.

I know NY won’t suddenly vote for a Conservative but if the Libs feel disenfranchised enough then they may just stay home.

It should not be where the GOP candidate starts out, but they should go for anywhere that is possible after they have sewn up the traditional swing states. After those states are in the bag, might as well try and take a fairly dark blue state like NY or CA. It would be a deep blow to the pride of the Democratic Party to lose one of their strongholds. It would also be payback for them taking some GOP strongholds in ‘08.

Dick Obama’s been -21 or -22 for five straight days. First time this has happened.

NY is a political aberration and there’s no real way top gauge how liberal the typical new yorker is from election results. As I’ve heard it, commie “helpers” actually go into voting booths with voters to “help” them figure the choices out.

I suspect a lot more people in NY were upset with the gay marriage passage and Obama’s role in it than had been reflected in the media.

Too bad we can’t make him President of those liberal ratholes for life. They helped elect him. SO did the damn New Yorkers.

Every time I hear some college kid complaining about the lack of jobs, I chuckle.

Hope you’re right. It’s my experience though that the left has better party loyalty than the right.

Not all college kids voted for Obama. My friends and I have been calling him the “Obamassiah” from the beginning. To be quite frank, I think the supposed youth excitement over Obama was ginned up for the most part. Most of my friends either didn’t care or were heavily anti-Obama. I knew a couple of pro-Obama kids, but they were misfits.

You have to remember that conservatism in the younger generation is repressed. If you are conservative on most college campuses today, you are not allowed to speak. Because of that, most of the younger people who are conservatives don’t participate in the political process for fear of retribution. They will when they have a family to feed, though.

The thing is - it might reduce the rabbit population for a few years - but then it’s back again :)

Well that just about cinches it. Obama will have at least one primary opponent.

I don’t recall any sitting president that had a primary opponent being reelected.

Yes Obama will be a one term president.
