"Norway: Lessons from a Successful Lone Wolf Attacker is republished with permission of STRATFOR."

... the lone wolf operational model presents a number of challenges for law enforcement, intelligence and security officers. .. When militants are operating in a cell consisting of more than one person, there is a larger chance that one of them will get cold feet and reveal the plot to authorities, that law enforcement and intelligence personnel will intercept a communication between conspirators, or that the authorities will be able to insert an informant into the group.

... Indeed, from Breivik’s diary, we know he took several years to plan and execute his attack without detection.

...

Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to differentiate between those extremists who intend to commit attacks and those who simply hold radical beliefs... authorities must spend a great deal of time and resources looking at individuals who might be moving from radical beliefs to radical actions.

In spite of the challenges presented ... they are vulnerable to detection at several different stages of their attack cycle. One of these vulnerabilities comes during the planning stage when weapons are acquired. From reading Breivik’s diary, it is clear that he felt exposed as he tried to purchase the chemicals he needed to build his IED. ...Breivik also exposed himself to potential detection when he traveled to Prague to attempt to purchase weapons. ...

Breivik also exposed himself to detection as he conducted surveillance on his targets... How Breivik specifically chose his targets and how he conducted surveillance on them will be important for the Norwegian authorities to examine.

This made me look.

Here’s a picture of the crater from Breivik’s bomb:

And here’s the crater from the similar sized bomb McVeigh supposed set off:

What’s wrong with these two pictures?

Don’t be so sure he was a lone wolf. He has connections to the Odinists.

Similar sized bombs and the craters are hugely different. It’s like the one in Oklahoma City was maybe underground?

A picture of a crater from an air-dropped bomb in WW2 looks more like the OK City crater.

Are you saying agents within our government conducted a inside job bombing on one of our Gov't buildings?

As for the OKC bomb, it contained tovex and other explosives, not related to what the Norway murder used.

>>What’s wrong with these two pictures?<<

One had dirt under it, the other had some sort of concrete infrastructure. i.e. one is a crater and the other is a hole.

I would say that the first lesson is that concealed carry saves lives.
The second lesson is that make sure your SWAT team has TWO helicopter pilots so that their chopper won’t be grounded when one of them goes on vacation...

Norway's settled areas are far enough North that you end up with a couple of months in the middle of the year where you have short nights and extra long days.

Some people can handle that well ~ most cannot.

Norwegians and Swedes accommodate the situation by GOING ON VACATION.

The place shuts down.
