NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A new national alert system is set to begin in New York City that will alert the public to emergencies via cell phones.

It’s called the Personal Localized Alert Network or PLAN. Presidential and local emergency messages as well as Amber Alerts would appear on cell phones equipped with special chips and software.

The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the system would also warn about terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

Heaven forbid you could just sign up for this service and receive a text message instead. But no, we need government chips doing god knows what in our phones.

Who gives FCC this power. Once the chip Is mandatory, does this give them access to your location, contacts, email. This needs to be headed off now. Sounds like a test market to see what push back, if any there is.

We had a Civil Defense alert system at one time. Huge sirens went off. It was very effective. We "drilled" by it when I was little...in the 60's.

I think it's much better than this...TV method, email method etc...It puts everyone on alert at the same time.

We have a not text plan, and must pay for any text messages, we chose it as we don’t DO texting. Another product WE don’t want or need that gov’t is demanding so it can track us.

So will we be inundated with these gov’t text messages we have to pay for...I’ll keep my OLD phone as long as humanly possible.

If there is a national emergency radio or TV will cover the d thing. When we are home the TV is on, and in the car the radio is on.

The National Alert system was required to run test. You know, “This is a Test of the Emergency Broadcast System”.

Will they still be required to run the test, and if so will your cell phone go off every time they do?

And to make sure everyone is able to receive these alerts, we have to provide cell phones to all people who cannot afford one.

If I were forced to purchase a cell phone by the gubmint i would just take out the battery & leave it useless.

I used to have a cell phone about 5 yrs ago and I found it completely unnecessary. I figured if someone wanted to get ahold of me they could call my landline and leave a message on the phone w/built-in message machine.

Ask yourself what were you doing before you “needed” a cell phone.

this is just another way of the gubmint sticking it’s hand ddown your pants

Insanity! You'll be able to turn off two levels of these warnings but if the acting President wants to send you a message, you are not able to block it.

The last person in the world I want to hear from is this schmuck. I don't turn on his State of the Union speeches or his I got Osama speeches. Get the F--- out of my life!

Consumers would be able to opt out of all but those presidential messages.

A chip isn’t required for this so obviously it has another purpose.

What happens when the cell systems go down or get overloaded?

I have a different take. It is a devious way to capture us. The Govt wants to make a straight line connection to its subjects.

So it is just ‘to me from the pres.’ There is no one else. No one vetting, no one defending, no sanity check, no push back, no knowledge of other subjects’ reactions. Just him living in my head.

And the connection in the other direction would be my dependence on the govt. The pres. is taking care of me.
