It's been nearly four years since audiences last saw his acrobatic web spinning prowess.

And now Spider-Man is back, this time with Andrew Garfield playing the iconic superhero.

Colombia Pictures today released the first image of the British actor in the infamous blue and red suit, with a few visible changes.

The suit looks a little more high-tech and modern than that worn by Tobey Maguire, who played the iconic character for three hit movies - the last one back in 2007.

Oh yeah. I've been waiting for Captain America with bated breathe ever since I saw his shield laying there in "Iron Man II". It should be awesome.

But, will he be doing his signature cartwheels with his shield at the ready?

The new Spidey and Cap seem evocative of the so-called “ultimate” versions. Hopefully the similarity stops there...it was the dystopian tone of those books (which leeched over to the regular books) that drove me away years ago!

You’re not wrong: the theater background has been a decisive factor.

But I think that ever since the huge name of MGM started having devastating money problems all of the big film makers have been quicker to use cheap(er) talent.

A while ago I was sitting around with some friends and we were talking about how there used to be this whole generation of American actors who could play tough, adult men. Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood. And they appeared in iconic roles through the 1960s and 70s. Now, there's a total lack of American actors who can play those roles. They're all wispy little emo boys--Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, etc.--or they're getting too old, like Eastwood or Mel Gibson. To play adult men who can look right with a gun in his hand, you've got to go foreign--Daniel Craig, Clive Owen, Liam Neeson, Russell Crowe.

Just try to name me the 30-40 year old American equivalent of Lee Marvin today.

Still, we'd probably have more of that type today if masculinity hadn't fallen out of favor in the popular culture.

Look, I know Spiderman is a comic book character and all, but having a cat play him is too much. A cat? C’mon.

The World War had alot to do with producing such guys.

Absolutely. The first wave of those guys were GIs who got back from the war and then went to acting schools under the GI Bill--Marvin, Ryan, Jack Palance, etc. The second wave, like McQueen and Eastwood, were a little younger, but still not baby-boomers.

Still, we'd probably have more of that type today if masculinity hadn't fallen out of favor in the popular culture.

That, and I think that if you are a masculine man, acting isn't something that appeals as a career choice the way I think it once must have. Finally, I think that the fact that Hollywood largely stopped making those kinds of movies in the 1980s, focusing on capturing teen audiences rather than adult audiences played a role.
