Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.
Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.
"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

Newark is in a completely different direction than New Castle though - right?
Bus routes are here, cursory glance doesn’t show one from Market St to Newark. http://www.wavetransit.com/routes-schedules.asp
I looked quickly as short on time and I don’t think he took bus to Newark (could be wrong)
My solution was a rug...
Now, if there was a workman in there while John was away and that makes sense because of the music/tv, I'll bet John said "Don't worry about the floor...we're going to have to replace it anyways."
Now if there were tracks all over the house, it would be a different story.
I'm almost thinking that this area we are seeing was treated more like a mud room than a formal kitchen. These old houses were set up weird.
Would you want to arrive in Wilmington Depot around or after midnight?
Pennsylvania carry permit doesn't reciprocate with Delaware, and Dems control the place so the crime rate is obviously high, so the answer is...nope!
Probably why they let this cabbie talk out loud about dropping John off in Wilmington on the AM of the 29th.
This is easy stuff....John was with a bunch of buddies at Mitre...I'm sure there was small talk...And there were a couple of guys that knew where John was staying.
hehe...you’re a West Coast Gal, alright! That’s from Wilmington, North Carolina, not Delaware. :-)
You want the DART system.
hah oops :)although I am concentrating on Nascar media day in Charlotte NC today - is that a good excuse? hehe
BTW, the Route 6 has a stop right in the direction he was headed when last seen...11th and King....except that he was crossing 11th, IIRC. He shouldn’t have done that for the bus, I think...if I recall correctly, there’s a major stop on the southwest corner of 11th and King, but he was crossing to the north side of 11th according to reports.
Workmen did not remove the floor. The early LEO reports said that THEY had removed the floor.
With some investigation they will know when the DC meeting ended. Also he could have bought a “pass” rather than a ticket. The difference is the pass can be used for anytime from two locations. A ticket only for a designated time between the locations.
And I'll bet the buddy John spoke with about sports via email on the 28th...knew John's tentative plans for watching the Army game.
Still drives me nuts that John didn't call his wife, or his kids or a buddy...and that he just didn't go home. Why spend a whole day in Wilmington??
He didn’t have a phone. Last call was on 28th. Maybe he put it in the brief case and didn’t have a charger with him. Phone may have been taken when he was mugged.
It was not found when they went into the house across the street on the twenty eighth, but it was found later in that same house. They wouldn’t have mugged him downtown and then taken his phone back to the house across the street.
The above link to the Bing map of the Gardens allows you to do a visual of the whole property. It looks to be a dumpster in the upper left hand corner when zoomed in close (dumpster may be white?).
It has been reported his limping gait was not new. We don't know what happened between 6 and 6:40; it is quite possible he walked a fair amount of distance in shoes not made for walking. Sore foot? Blister? Circulatory problems? It is quite possible he was carrying his left shoe for a very valid reason.
I have watched the raw AP video several times. How anyone could mistake him for a homeless man is beyond me.
I doubt most homeless men wear suits.
His pant leg and some of the sleeve of the suit were mentioned as dirty by people who saw him and as I saw in the video. It looks to me like he had been on the ground at some point. I don’t think the shoe tells us anything really.
This is a different video than what I saw earlier. No time stamp, but more movements.

If he'd fallen down in snow. It would have melted not leaving any dirt but a wet spot or be white.
If he had fallen on dry dirt is would have just brushed off, like the ashes from my wood stove.
It had been snowing and was still very cold during that week. The ground was frozen. Falling on it would be like falling on rocks. It would not adhere to his clothes.
What appears on his clothes is mud. He was knocked down in the mud....
Where was there mud?

Thank you for video link - unfortunately there are some videos that won’t play for me and that happens to be one of those :(
