SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris will be California's next attorney general, after her Republican opponent conceded today - a full three weeks after the Nov. 2 election.
Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley had declared victory on election night, only to see the race flip-flop between the two candidates in the coming days as counties around the state continued to tally mail-in and provisional ballots. This morning, Cooley called Harris - who is now leading by 50,000 votes - to concede and congratulate her.
She will become the state's first female attorney general.
In a written statement, Cooley said his campaign "believes that we cannot make up the current gap in the vote count."
"It is unfortunate that someone who is a non-partisan non-politician could not overcome the increasingly partisan tendencies of the state, even for an office that by its nature necessitates a non-partisan approach," he added.
Harris will now join San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom - the state's lieutenant governor-elect - in Sacramento next year, . . .

Speeding CA down the path to the toilet bowl.
This is an anti-business hag who will ignore real crime and attack business instead.
They tallied 'em as fast as they could print 'em.
Well, there you have it. With a couple of exceptions, CA is 100% rat. Who will they complain about/to now? Capt Moonbeam and crew, lines away, it’s all yours...happy sailing.
So be it. Let them go down by themselves....No bailouts.
Another buffoon for the state of loons. Condolences to our Ca. Conservatives enduring these incompetent fools in elected office there.
I don't foresee any executions in California for at least the next eight years, assuming she wins a second term. That's almost guaranteed in this crazy, liberal state.
Between Harris and Newsom, the Democrats are going to change this state irreparably over the next several years. These people are as far left as you can get. I see no Republican on the horizon that can be elected to a state wide office. They say it is darkest before the dawn. I hope so. God help us.
Weirdly enough, this is good news in San Francisco, as she was the leading contender to replace Newsom, who is seen as sane and pro-business by SF standards. Harris, on the other hand, was seen as a hopeless ideological idiot.
If SF gets someone better than K.Harris (big if), maybe San Francisco will gain by this at the expense of the State.
“With a couple of exceptions, CA is 100% rat”
I looked at the California statewide results and I cannot find one exception. The rats won all the statewide offices. Every single incumbent rat won in the California senate, state assembly, and U.S. House of Representatives. Boxer is back for six more years. All of the ballot propositions contests were won by the democrat/unions.
In San Diego a registered republican beat a registered democrat in my city council district. That is the only exception I found.
We have a different version of that quote here in CA;
It always gets darkest, just before the lights go totally out.
You guys should click the link and read the comments. Wow.
The Golden State turns Brown.
Republican prospects for California don’t look promising. The only good thing that happened there was the Passing of Proposition 20, which took control of redistricting from the state legislature.
We are so utterly screwed now.
Kalifornia is dead. There are now avowed socialists in charge at every level of government. Moreover, with the passage of Proposition 25, any mitigation that the few Republicans in the legislature could do is now gone.
Kalifornia is finished. There is no coming back from this. Will the last Conservative please turn the lights out?
That's if she even decides to prosecute.
A German tourist was recently murdered while celebrating her wedding anniversary with her husband. She got caught in gang crossfire (she wasn't even in a bad part of town). A cabdriver followed the shooters while calling the cops who arrested them. Harris' DA office declined to press charges. The killers bragged about it on their Facebook pages.
