they have been within their rights to ask for an ID in this case. Because how in this world should a police officer fullfill his job if she/he has no chance to verify what you might say? i mean serious what would be next. sorry sir but we stopped you because the car you are driving looks exactly like the car which has just been stolen one block away. so is this your car? btw. do you have a driver license? (of course there is no need to show it because if you say yes all the time i believe you so there is no need to check it... ;-)
