I wrote this poem on September 12-13, 2001

THE DAY LIBERTY CRIED
By EJS 9/13/01

She was there as it all began,
They arrived in boats from foreign lands,
She was moved to behold their new-found pride,
But she held her tears, she never cried.

She saluted her beloved sons,
As they boarded ships and manned their guns,
To defend her name despite the cost,
She still calls the names of the sons she lost.

In war and peace she held her post,
Torch in hand, steadfast, composed,
Until the day horror filled her eyes,
That autumn day when Liberty cried.

She cringed at every piercing scream,
Each broken home, each shattered dream.
The twisted metal and choking smoke,
Eyes welled with tears, she sobbed, she broke.

With trembling knees about to give,
And questioning her very will to live.
With head bowed low to God she wailed,
“I let them down, my name has failed.”

As her tired shoulder lowered the flame,
She heard someone call out her name.
Across the bay all along the shore,
Rose a chorus from past and present wars.

And in that moment of awkward shame,
Her eyes transfixed upon her flame.
For in it burns the hope for all,
Who claim her as their privileged call.

With new found strength and hope restored,
She raised herself and her flaming sword.
To show the world that they might see,
That freedom will forever be.

For the evil of men who thrive on fear,
Can cause a wound, can produce a tear.
But they will never destroy that sacred name,
For when Liberty cried, it fueled her flame.

I was still in bed asleep just before our alarm was to go off,in Eagle Rock, Ca. The phone rang and my daughter yelled into the phone that a plane had just gone through one of the twin towers in NY.

Jumped out of bed and ran to the TV just as the second plane hit. It was a nightmare from that moment on. I remember standing with tears in my eyes as President Bush declared that the country had been attacked.

Immediately the streets here locally were filled with flags. AMERICAN flags on cars, houses, churches, everywhere were flags of support.

We have never been the same.

God Bless America.

Apparently, from I’ve been reading, the NYPD will have an “army of cops” to keep both sides apart.

AN ARMY OF COPS!! Is this still America????

I was teaching 8th gr History to an ESL class in rm 411 of I.S.125 in Queens NY.The Prin made an announcement for any staff member with family working at WTC to call the office. I went into the hall and asked a teacher what happened. She said 2 planes hit the WTC. I said “Theres 50 miles of visibility out there...” Then reality hit me. She watched my class for a bit, as I went to a window on the bldg’s west side.I’ll never forget that vision of Hell as long as I live.Later I left the bldg to go up to Queens Blvd and saw 1000s of people walking the blvd. The subways were shut down and these were people who’d walked across the 59 st bridge. One in three of them were covered in grey dust making them look like ghosts.

That’s why I suggested the “eat in”....Can they deny you food? Just attended the American Rib Fest in Indy last week...great pulled pork and ribs. Seems like having a good ol Americana Festival complete with a hog roast would be a good idea. Sort of a block party with Am flags, sauce contests, musical tributes etc. There are actually Bar-B-q groups that travel the country and compete at these festivals.

I was at my mother’s old home in Bound Brook, New Jersey about 25 miles west of Manhattan. I remember hearing about the first plane hitting and telling my mom that it was no accident. I had worked on Ellis Island in New York Harbor and knew that nobody “accidentally” hits the World Trade Center in a plane on a clear day. The second hit confirmed my suspicions.

Soon we heard another jet went down in Somerset County. We didn’t know at first that it was Somerset County PA. My mom’s house was in Somerset County, New Jersey. The quarry nearby had been doing some blasting that morning and for about 15 minutes we thought the plane had gone down near us.

My old home town sits on the rail line that goes into Newark and New York City and I still remember the cars in the commuter rail lots that had to be towed away days later...their owner’s were dead.

Im glad our grandparents didnt stand around after pearl harbor reading names. Instead the rebuilt that navy and went over and beat the japanese over the head with it.

I am afraid the delay in rebuilding is indicative of how screwed up some of us have become. Instead of hitting the ground running and rebuilding...we stand around and debate about what we should do for years.

I had my problems with former President Bush but he will always have a great share of respect from me, because he and his administration took a deep breath and hit the enemy back hard without hesitation. That was no nonsense American leadership !!!!

I had my issues with Bush as well. That said he is an honorable man. But come september 12th 2001 afghanistan should have been a sea of glass. Instead we fought it half ass (our political leaders not our troops) with no definition of victory.

I was off work and in my house at Fort Gordon, Georgia. After a few hours of watching I had to go out just to see people.

My daughter learned to walk that day. Very bittersweet seeing so many lives end that day and having her take her first steps.

It's actually kind of symbolic.

Many of us "learned to walk" that day.

I was in high school at the time, and didn't care much for politics. Not to politicize the events of 9/11, but my eyes were opened with regards to how it really does matter who's running our country. Thank God President Bush was at the helm that day.

I was at work, going through my mother’s mail (family business) and about to shred a credit card application which had been mailed there... Though even more interesting is where my dad was: on a table in a medical facility a=with a doctor’s arm in his chest, removing a mall, benign growth. Besides concern for the country, my dad was worried about the doctor who had just told him what happened, and whose arm was in his chest...

I was passing morning meds at county home in NW Indiana, during their breakfast. One of my residents, a real sweetie, came by and told us a plane had hit the first tower. Right next to the dining room was the living room, and we turned the big TV on. We all watched, shocked..stunned.. horrified, and then the second plane hit. Spent that day watching coverage with my residents and co-workers..... only stopping to answer the phone. As soon as I got home I came here. I was lurking only in those days, but this is where I needed to be.

I will NEVER forget that day....NEVER.

Flight 93 flew over Western PA. When it was still in the air, downtown Pittsburgh was emptied out. When i was driven home that afternoon, it was astounding to see no one out. It was obvious something was terribly wrong.

"The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some people understand slowness, but is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to come to repentance.
But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will disappear with a roaring sound, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be exposed.
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, think of the kind of holy and godly people you ought to be as you look forward to and hasten the coming of the day of God, by which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved and the elements will melt with fire.
But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to have him find you without spot or fault and at peace."
