When Rodolfo Olmedo was dragged down by a group of men shouting anti-Mexican epithets and bashed over the head with a wooden stick on the street outside his home, he instinctively covered his face to keep from getting disfigured. Blood filled his mouth.
"I wanted to scream, but I couldn't because of the beating they were giving me," said the 25-year-old baker. Nearly five months later, he is still taking pain medications for his head injuries.
Recorded by a store's surveillance camera, the assault was the first of 11 suspected anti-Hispanic bias attacks in a Staten Island neighborhood, re-igniting years-old tensions between blacks and Hispanics in New York City's most remote borough.
Residents of Port Richmond -- where an influx of newcomers from Latin America over the past decade has transformed the community -- alternately blame the attacks on the economy, unemployment and the debate over tough new immigration law in the border state of Arizona.
And although most of the suspects were described as young black men and investigated for bias crimes, a grand jury has indicted only one of seven people arrested on a hate-crime charge.

Yeah, the modern World sure is tough on “journalists”. They can’t figure out whether to call an attack by a bunch of African-Americans shouting anti-Mexican epithets a “hate crime”. Maybe they should address the question to their Jornolist commissar.
Earlier this summer I spent a week in L.A. showing my wife and son around as I grew up there.
As we drive around I saw billboards extolling folks to back the Mexican National soccer team. None supporting the U.S. team.
Made me want to get a gallon of gas and a match.
“the assault was the first of 11 suspected anti-Hispanic bias attacks in a Staten Island neighborhood, re-igniting years-old tensions between blacks and Hispanics in New York City’s most remote borough “
10 years of unchecked illegal immigration is taking the blue collar jobs from black Americans. And I guess they shouldn’t be angry.
This is a sign you are insensitive.
You have to locate the potential victim and victimizer relative positions on demographic hierarchy than to determine if it is a hate crime. That is why police always have to investigate to determine if a hate crime was committed by finding out who played the roles, versus the original way of investigating a actual crime.
The only way blacks can commit a hate crime is if they do something to a homosexual because homosexuals are at the top.
” If it’s “years-old tensions” how could Arizona’s new immigration law have anything to do with it? “
LOL!
Tensions or physical assaults?
There is a difference.
I suspect that somewhere out there, either formal or informal, there is a template or flowchart that details precisely how to report such things.
I seem to remember an article or two posted here on FR reporting that the attacker in this case was a — tah dah — Somalian immigrant, not a native black person. There was a picture. I wonder why this round of hand-wringing stories on this incident has neglected to include information about the perp.
Then blacks should seek out the homosexual illegal immigrants to be on the safe side.
Somehow I find it difficult to care.
We have laws for dealing with battery. Find the perps, stick ‘em in jail, give ‘em a fair trial.
Clearly this is due to the Tea Party’s racism. /s
In Los Angeles, blacks and hispanics have been killing each other for many years. I don’t know about Staten Island.
I don’t think blacks understand that not all races are interested in blacks running everything and reaping all the benefits. Nor are Mexicans intimidated by black gangs and the stupid Pampers.
“There are streets in Mexican neighborhoods where blacks can never walk on or they will be shot on sight by Mexican gangs”
I take it the Bloods and Crips aren’t as skilled at sadism as the Mexican Gangs?
Maybe we can get the Bloods and the Crips to guard the border.
You won't, until the Hispanics start going after cushy government jobs, and also replace black politicians with Hispanic politicians.
Same here. Now, if we can just stay out of the fray, things will be just fine. I wonder though, if hispanics really resent whites the way so many blacks do.
In my experience, living in a formerly mostly black neighborhood which is now mostly Latino (read Mexican), Blacks and Latinos do not really compete for the same jobs — at least not on an equal footing.
Reason why? While Latinos are not hella big on education, they are entreprenurial. Lots of Latinos who used to complete for lower-rung jobs have moved from being employees to employers, and guess who they’re hiring?
Meanwhile, the black thugs in the neighborhood are preying on recently arrived Nepalese/Bhutanese refugees — because they are the easiest targets. Probably because of that Arizona law, of course.
